As of the census of 2000, there are 1,670 people, 735 households, and 530 families residing in the city. The population density is 6.1/km² (15.8/mi²). There are 801 housing units at an average density of 2.9/km² (7.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.86% White, 0.12% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 735 households out of which 21.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.4% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% are non-families. 25.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.67.

History:

Babbitt, a city in Babbitt Township (T. 60N, R. 12W), section 18, was incorporated as a village on September 12, 1956; it was named for Judge Kurnal R. Babbitt of New York City; the post office began in 1920.
