There were 275 households out of which 27.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.9% were married couples living together, 13.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.5% were non-families. 39.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.11 and the average family size was 2.82.
In the city the population was spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 26.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 80.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $21,607, and the median income for a family was $34,643. Males had a median income of $30,833 versus $22,232 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,848. About 9.5% of families and 13.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.8% of those under age 18 and 9.2% of those age 65 or over.

Cook, a city in section 18, Owens Township, platted in 1903, was named in honor of Wirth H. Cook, a lumber dealer of Duluth, chief promoter of the construction of Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway, who became its president. The city was incorporated as a village on May 13, 1926; it had a station of the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railroad and the Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway. The post office was formerly at Ashawa, 1903-8, a Duluth, Rainy Lake and Winnipeg Railway station in section 19 of Field Township, moving to Cook in 1908.

| On the first Sunday in September, the Lake Vermilion Resort Association will host the Annual Antique and Classic Boat Show. Second Weekend in June |
| Timber Days recognizes the impact the timber industry has on Cook and the surrounding area. The festival includes logging history and educational displays. It will demonstrate the use of forest products, forest resources and various forest-based art forms. There will also be performing artists such as musicians and a professional Puppeteer. Other highlights will be the mud run on Saturday and the giant parade on Sunday, along with many other activities throughout the weekend. | |

Mesabi Trail
The Taconite Trail winds through forests of birch and aspen intertwined with pine, leading the visitor by many isolated lakes and streams. From Grand Rapids heading north, you see the impact of the taconite and iron mining industry. The northern portion of the trail terrain is rolling and tree covered as it winds through state and national forest land. Eight trail waysides and picnic facilities offer scenic vistas of the hills, lakes and rivers of this area. The trail also links three state parks: Bear Head Lake, Soudan Underground Mine, and McCarthy Beach. The landscape in and around Bear Head Lake State Park is very rolling and rocky. |

The
Taconite State Trail stretches 165 miles from Grand Rapids to Ely
and intersects with the Arrowhead State Trail just west of Lake
Vermillion. Portions are paved for biking and in-line skating. The
remainder of the natural surface trail is used primarily for snowmobiling
in the winter. The trail goes through a few areas that have standing
water in the summer, however portions of the trail are suitable
for horseback riding, hiking, and mountain biking.
