Alexandria Minnesota Community Guide

Alexandria is a city in and the county seat of Douglas County, Minnesota. Alexandria is located near Interstate 94 (concurrent with U.S. Route 52 in this part of the state), along Minnesota State Highways 27 and 29. Lake Carlos State Park is ten miles north of Alexandria. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.92 square miles, of which 17.18 square miles is land and 0.74 square miles is water.  The elevation is 1,404 ft (428 m) above sea level.

ALEXANDRIA, settled in 1858, established as a township June 15, 1866, was named in honor of Alexander Kinkead, because he and his brother William were its first settlers, coming from Maryland. The form of the name follows that of the large city in Egypt, which was founded in the year 332 B.C. by Alexander the Great. Fifteen other states have villages or cities of this name. The village of Alexandria was incorporated February 20, 1877, its charter as a city was adopted in 1908, and it was incorporated as a city in 1909. It was surveyed in 1866 and purchased in 1868 by W. E. Hicks, who established a mill, a hotel, a store, and the first newspaper, also donating property for a courthouse, a jail, and Methodist and Congregational churches; he served as first postmaster when the office was established in 1858. The first passenger train on the railroad reached this place November 5, 1878. The village was known as a summer resort during the 1870s.

He built a small farm house on the property in 1874. As his political career progressed, he make additions to the house, adding a formal living room and large bedroom in 1900. On October 1, 1987, the Knute Nelson House became the headquarters of the Douglas County Historical Society. The turn of the century house has been completely restored, with many of the original furnishings intact.

The Central Lakes Trail is built on an abandoned Burlington Northern Railroad corridor in central Minnesota. In Douglas County, it begins in Osakis and travels northwesterly across three counties to Fergus Falls in Ottertail County.

Featuring a playground, volleyball court, restrooms, picnic shelter and a softball field. The park is a popular spot for casual volleyball and softball games as well as group gatherings. Runestone Park is used by families for picnics and reunions, businesses and other groups for pleasure outings, and winter sports enthusiasts for skiing, tobogganing, and snowmobiling. There are 2 picnic shelter areas and a range of outdoor recreation activities including, volleyball, horseshoes, and hiking. Several history displays are maintained to help interpret the Runestone Park story.
Lake Brophy County Park 2175 Brophy Landing NW Alexandria, MN 56308 Phone: (320) 762-2999 Web: www.douglascountymn.gov The park is a little under 6 acres with 1200 feet of pristine shoreline on a fine fishing lake. A popular spot for summer afternoon picnics, Lake Brophy Park's shelter can accommodate groups of about 25 people nicely. Two examples of fine cut stone craftsmanship remain in the park, leftovers from the depression era work programs of the 1930s and 40s.

From Alexandria, go north on State Trunk Highway 29 just past the city limits to the beach entrance. The beach is also accessible by a paved off road bicycle path that connects the city neighborhoods south of the lake.

Walking paths all around with picnic tables, grills, walking bridge, basketball court and flower beds. A nice place to watch and feed the ducks and geese, but please don’t give them bread. Contrary to popular practices, feeding bread to the wildlife is both bad for the birds as well as the water quality. Instead, try feeding them bird seeds, thawed frozen peas, corn, oats or chopped lettuce.

Spruce Hill Park 13148 Spruce Hill Park Road Miltona, MN 56354 Phone: (320) 762-2999 Web: www.douglascountymn.gov The pioneer village of Spruce Hill was vacated in the early twentieth century. The property sat undisturbed in the ownership of a former resident until Douglas County acquired it in 1979. Remnants of the early village are evident today only as depressions in the ground and old building foundation pieces. The remains of an earthen dam constructed to power a sawmill are still visible in the landscape.
Veterans Memorial Park 802 Broadway Street Alexandria, MN 56308 Phone: (320) 460-8303 Web: www.alexveteranspark.org The main focus of the Veterans Memorial Park is the 9-foot granite replica of the Liberty Bell placed in the center of a Pentagon and Star if seen from above.  Nine flagpoles display flags of the United States, State of Minnesota, POW-MIA, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine.  Granite monoliths are inscribed with the names of over 7,000 veterans.

Our organization is run totally by volunteers and supported by membership dues, fund-raising events, sponsorships and donations. We curl on four sheets of ice at the Runestone Community Center on Wednesday night. The club is an IRS designated 501(c) 3 non-profit organization.
