According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.0 km² (1.5 mi²), all land. The city is conveniently located 40 miles from both Grand Forks, North Dakota and Thief River Falls, Minnesota. Argyle is also located 130 miles from Winnipeg, Manitoba and 360 miles from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The relatively flat area around Argyle is good for farming.

As of the census of 2000, there were 656 people, 255 households, and 179 families residing in the city. The population density was 164.5/km² (424.9/mi²). There were 284 housing units at an average density of 71.2/km² (184.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.27% White, 0.15% African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 3.20% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.57% of the population.

There were 255 households out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.5% were married couples living together, 4.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.15.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $36,154, and the median income for a family was $42,361. Males had a median income of $31,985 versus $19,688 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,974. About 13.6% of families and 15.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.0% of those under age 18 and 22.9% of those age 65 or over.

Before James J. Hill bought the Great Northern Railway in 1879 and accepted the task of completing the line from Crookston to the Canadian border, a French-Canadian man founded a town named Louisa, after the French king, in the path of the railroad. However, Hill's company located the new railroad town just south of the Louisa property line and named it Argyle. The early settlement included many French-Canadians. Other settlers included immigrants from England, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Scotland, and Germany. The early townspeople and businessmen were always anxious to make Argyle an attractive community to the region. Today the community still boasts of several businesses, which draw customers from the regional area. Because of threats of flooding, a dike was built on the Red River in 1988.

ARGYLE, a city in sections 10 and 15 in Middle River Township, bears the name of a county in western Scotland, which is borne also by a township in Maine and by villages in nine other states. This name was proposed by Hon. Solomon G. Comstock for Argyle, Maine, where he was born in 1842 and for whom a township of this county is named. The city was incorporated as a village December 12, 1883. Settlers were on the site in the early 1870s, which was first called Frenchtown and then Louisa; its post office was established in 1878 as Middle River, changing to Argyle in 1882. The city developed on a Great Northern Railway site and had a flour mill, a general store, a hotel, and a number of other businesses.

A log cabin and a steam-powered flour mill at Old Mill State Park are bold landmarks from the past. The grist mill still gets fired up once a year to grind flour. The Middle River meanders through the park and visitors can see deer, beaver, and moose. Enjoy the prairie and the ever-changing parade of wildflowers along wooded trails.

The campground contains 26 beautiful sites near the Middle River. The campground is located within easy walking distance to the historic Larson Mill. The park has 10 electric sites available during the summer camping season with 120v and 30 amp service. All electric sites also have water hook-up available for use.
