According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²), all land.

Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there were 255 people, 115 households, and 70 families residing in the city. The population density was 234.4/km² (607.9/mi²). There were 131 housing units at an average density of 120.4/km² (312.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.61% White, and 0.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.67% of the population.

There were 115 households out of which 27.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.7% were married couples living together, 3.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% were non-families. 38.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 99.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 111.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $33,438, and the median income for a family was $46,094. Males had a median income of $30,893 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,094. About 2.8% of families and 5.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.5% of those under the age of eighteen and 4.2% of those sixty five or over.

History:

KENNEDY, a city on the border of Skane and Tegner Townships, was platted December 31, 1880, and incorporated as a village on June 15, 1899. It was named in honor of John Stewart Kennedy (1830-1909). From his former home in Scotland he came to America in 1856, settled in New York City, and was an iron merchant, banker, and railway director. He was a generous donor to many public charities and for educational and religious work. The Kennedy Land and Town Company, operating a bonanza farming project, convinced the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railroad, which had planned the site of a station two miles north, to build through the village, expanding the trade opportunities. Its post office began in 1881.

Trails - Drive U.S. Highway 75 the King of Trails from Canada to Mexico

Information - This trail was previously utilized by Native Americans/settlers and was designated by the State of Minnesota as "The Historic King of Trails" in 2001. Efforts include an annual marketplace day where communities along Hwy. 75 invite vendors to openly market their goods at select locations.

Snowmobile - Groomed trail runs throughout Kittson County and connects with Lake Bronson State Park, Pelan and McTrail System Trails. Trail features Red River flat prairie and wooded wilderness with deer, moose and other wildlife. Access to good ungroomed riding.
