Stephen is a city in Marshall County, Minnesota. US Highway 75 serves as a main arterial route in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.81 square miles (2.10 km2), all of it land. The elevation is 830 ft (253 m) above sea level.

As of the census of 2010, there were 658 people, 304 households, and 174 families residing in the city. The population density was 812.3 inhabitants per square mile (313.6/km2). There were 346 housing units at an average density of 427.2 per square mile (164.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.9% White, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% from other races, and 0.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.0% of the population.

There were 304 households of which 21.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% were married couples living together, 5.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 42.8% were non-families. 40.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.16 and the average family size was 2.93.

The median age in the city was 46.8 years. 20.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 21.4% were from 25 to 44; 29.7% were from 45 to 64; and 23.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.4% male and 50.6% female.

STEPHEN, a city in sections 5 and 6 in Tamarac Township and north of Tamarac River, was named in honor of George Stephen, a prominent financial associate of James J. Hill in the building of the Great Northern Railway system. He was born at Dufftown, in Banffshire, Scotland, June 5, 1829; came to Canada in 1850, settling in Montreal, and engaged in dry goods business and manufacturing cloth; was president of the Bank of Montreal, 1876-81, and president of the Canadian Pacific Railway company, 1881-87; was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1886; was a founder in 1887, with Sir Donald Smith, of the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal; removed to England in 1888 and resided in London. In 1891 he received the title of Baron Mount Stephen, referring to a peak of the Rocky Mountains named for him during the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The city was incorporated as a village December 18, 1883; the original settlement, known as Tamarack, was in 1878 in a sheltered location south of the Tamarac River where the first building was the Great Northern Railway section house; the post office was established in 1879 on the John Hughes farm in section 8 and moved to the new site when developed in 1883.
