Geography:

McGregor is a city in Aitkin County, Minnesota. Minnesota State Highways 65 and 210 are two of the main arterial routes in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²), of which, 2.0 square miles (5.1 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (6.22%) is water. The elevation is 1,230 ft (375 m) above sea level.

Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there were 404 people, 182 households, and 105 families residing in the city. The population density was 205.5 people per square mile (79.2/km²). There were 199 housing units at an average density of 101.2/sq mi (39.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.54% White, 0.50% African American, 3.22% Native American, 0.50% from other races, and 0.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.50% of the population. 30.1% were of German, 17.0% Finnish, 16.7% Norwegian, 5.9% Swedish and 5.2% American ancestry according to Census 2000.

There were 182 households out of which 27.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.6% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.8% were non-families. 39.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 20.8% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 83.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $24,318, and the median income for a family was $30,625. Males had a median income of $27,125 versus $16,607 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,167. About 6.8% of families and 13.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.8% of those under age 18 and 17.3% of those age 65 or over.

History:

McGregor, a city in McGregor Township, sections 30 and 31; incorporated on August 27, 1903, and separated from the township on March 24, 1919; named either for a hunter and trapper named McGregor who came from New York or for Maj. John G. MacGregor of Minneapolis; the post office was established in 1890.

Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters is located in Aitkin County on Hwy 65, five miles South of McGregor, MN. A visitor center with displays is available Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1935 to preserve valuable habitat for waterfowl. The Refuge is 18,300 acres and Rice Lake itself is 4,500 acres. Rice Lake is a shallow, wild rice producing lake, which is a valuable food source for wildlife. Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge is home to one of the largest concentrations of migrating ring-necked ducks in the country. During fall migration, more than 150,000 ducks can be found on the Refuge.

Nothing but nature will greet you here. The course will be semi-private (eventually privately owned by the community), completely gated and miles from the nearest freeway. The course will include: an 18-hole, 7,200-yard championship course that has five tee boxes for all skill levels (projected opening August 2007); Plus a 9 hole executive course featuring junior tees for families and those who would like less of a challenge. The clubhouse features restaurants, tennis courts and a swimming pool.

Walk the Savanna Portage Trail, a historic trail traveled by fur traders, Dakota and Ojibwe Indians, and explorers more than 200 years ago. Savanna Portage State Park has 15,818 acres of rolling hills, lakes, and bogs. The Continental Divide marks the great division of water: water to the west flows into the Mississippi River; water to the east runs into Lake Superior. Visitors can hike the Continental Divide Trail and see forested vistas. During the summer, visitors enjoy swimming at Loon Lake. Bike enthusiasts can pedal on roads, or on dirt trails designated for mountain bikes. With four fishing lakes and a river, its common for anglers to catch panfish, trout and bass. Come winter, this park offers snowmobilers approximately 60 miles of trails to explore. This park is a favorite among cross-country skiers too with 10 miles of trails to ski.

McGregor ISD #4 is a small, rural school district that is located in a beautiful area of northern Minnesota. The school district serves about 500 students and is housed in a building that includes an elementary, a high school, and early childhood center. Army Corp of Engineers Campground at Sandy Lake, McGregor Minnesota

The recreation area and campground are located at the outlet of Big Sandy Lake, which is on the canoe route that linked Lake Superior and the Mississippi River. The Northwest and American fur companies established major trading posts on the lake in the 1700s.

The campground has 43 single-family electric sites, 8 walk-in tent sites, 2 group sites, and 5 double-occupancy sites. Other amenities include dump stations, laundry facilities, showers, 2 boat ramps on the lake, 1 boat ramp on the river, swimming beach, playgrounds, picnic shelter, fishing platforms, and a museum.
