History:

Aitkin Township bears the same name as the county. Its village, also bearing this name, was founded on September 13, 1870, as a station of the Northern Pacific Railroad, which in that year was built through the county, when Nathaniel Tibbetts, then with a surveying party, selected a claim of 160 acres in sections 23 to 26 to which he brought his family in 1871. The next year, in the county organization, it was made the county seat; it was incorporated on August 19, 1889, and re-incorporated on March 16, 1915. Its post office was established in 1872, with Tibbetts as first postmaster; see also LANKIAGUN.

In the village of Aitkin and westward, a beach ridge of gravel and sand, having a height of three to five feet, marks the south shore of a glacial lake, which existed during a geologically very short time in the broad and shallow depression of this part of the Mississippi Valley. It was first described and mapped by the present writer in Volume IV of the Final Report of the Geological Survey of Minnesota, published in 1899, being then known to extend from the edge of Crow Wing County eastward and northward in Aitkin, Spencer, and Morrison Townships.

Rippleside Elementary School, Aitkin Minnesota

Rippleside Elementary School was established in 1957. Before that time the elementary school was a part of the high school. Rippleside's first building phase was to house primary students only and is our existing primary area. In 1966, the additional classrooms were added for intermediate classes. An addition was added in 1981 for a music area and a second gym, which also serves as a lunchroom. A computer area was constructed in 1988. In 1994, a new front entry and handicapped accessible areas were put in, along with remodeling of the Media Center and Office area. In 1999, the Aitkin Children's Center was built. In the fall of 2001, Rippleside opened a new wing along with updating other building areas. It includes three additional classrooms, an art room, a science lab, a learning center, and a media technology area. The building serves children in Early Childhood through 6th grade and includes about 30 classrooms, an art room, 2 gyms, 2 computer labs, media center, music room, science lab, and Spanish room. The building is always being improved for educational needs and safety concerns.
