DEERWOOD, a city of Deerwood Township, platted on February 1, 1892, and incorporated as a village on October 8, 1909. It was at first called Withington, "after the maiden name of the wife of one of the railway officials," was renamed for the plentiful deer in its woods, the name being thence given to the township. This change was made to avoid confusion with Worthington, Nobles County. Another version of the name's origin is that it was first known as Withington for J. S. Withington, a member of the first board of directors of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The village had a station of the Northern Pacific, and the post office was established in 1882.
