According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²), all land.

Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there were 784 people, 317 households, and 194 families residing in the city. The population density was 205.9/km² (534.6/mi²). There were 348 housing units at an average density of 91.4/km² (237.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.98% White, 0.38% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.13% Asian, and 0.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.13% of the population.

There were 317 households out of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.7% were married couples living together, 4.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.8% were non-families. 36.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 25.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,750, and the median income for a family was $46,339. Males had a median income of $30,268 versus $20,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,565. About 2.4% of families and 6.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.3% of those under age 18 and 18.2% of those age 65 or over.

History:

GREENBUSH, a city in section 10 of Hereim, was named for the first evergreen trees seen near the "ridge road," as one comes eastward from the Red River valley. These are spruce trees, about two miles northeast of the village. An early trail, later a wagon road, and latest the Great Northern Railway, here began a curving course along a gravel beach ridge of Glacial Lake Agassiz, following this beach for about 20 miles, or nearly to the site of Roseau. Early settlers were Polish, Bohemian, and Scandinavian immigrants; the city was called West Greenbush or New Greenbush for many years because the first site, now called Old Greenbush, was located on a ridge two miles northeast in section 10. The post office was established in 1892, first on the Hedges farm in section 36 of Barto Township, with Fedelia Hedges, postmaster; in 1899 it was moved to Olaf Hildahl's general store in section 31 of Skagen Township and in 1904 was moved again to the present townsite when Hildahl moved his store there.

The City Office and Library also share this building. You may rent the community center by contacting the city office at 782-2570 or greenbush@wiktel.com. The community center has an attached kitchen that the public may also use. The meeting space is 51' x 38'. Chair and tables may be used when using this room. There are two restroom facilities , one on each side of the room. The kitchen has pots, pans, coffee servers, pitchers, other dishes, fridge, freezer and stove available for use. The rental fee for the main room is $40.00 per day and the fee for the kitchen is $30.00 per day. Non-profit organizations may use the facilities for free.
