History:

STILLWATER, the county seat, was founded in 1843, and on October 26 of that year its name, "proposed by John McKusick, was adopted. This name was suggested by the stillness of the water in the lake, the anomaly of building a mill beside still water, and by fond recollections of Stillwater, Maine" (History of Washington County and the St. Croix Valley, p. 500). The city was incorporated on the same date as St. Paul, March 4, 1854, and the township was organized in May 1858. The earliest settlement here was by Joseph R. Brown, 1838-41, platting a townsite that he named Dahkotah on the north part of the present city area. The city was the county seat of St. Croix County, Wisconsin Territory, and continued as the county seat when the name was changed to Still Water, the post office name when it was established in 1846, with Elam Greeley as the first postmaster; the post office was transferred to Minnesota Territory in 1849, and Stillwater became the county seat of Washington County, the oldest county seat in the present state boundaries. Section 4 of Baytown Township was platted as an addition to Stillwater in 1856.

Stillwater is located 20 miles east of St. Paul on the banks of the scenic St. Croix River and the Wisconsin border. Settled in 1843, Stillwater became the center of the lumber industry in the upper Midwest for the next 75 years. During the late 1880s and early 1890s, more logs passed down the St. Croix River than any other place in the world, and the lumber produced in Stillwater was used to build the central part of the United States. One of the first institutions authorized by the Territory of Minnesota, the prison, was located in Stillwater. Three of the most notorious convicts were the Younger brothers--Cole, Jim, and Bob--who, along with Frank and Jesse James, tried to rob the bank in Northfield in 1876. The Jameses eluded capture, but the Youngers served 25 years behind the stone walls of the Stillwater Prison.

As part of HealthPartners, we work closely with the world class team at Regions Hospital, and many of our doctors treat patients at both hospitals. But that doesn’t mean our patients in the valley need to travel for top critical care. Lakeview is a Level III Trauma Hospital and the best-equipped in the area. And once the planned Lakeview Hospital expansion is complete, you’ll have access to even more services and support. We’re proud to be a part of the St. Croix Valley community. To us, doing our part means serving patients and building healthy communities on both sides of the river – from Prescott to Taylors Falls and beyond. That’s why we work closely with our partner hospitals and clinics in the region, including Amery, Westfields and Hudson Hospitals.
