History:

Iron ore explorations had been carried on extensively throughout the western Mesabi Range by 1904, when large deposits were found at the site of present Keewatin. A settlement grew there and took its name from the Ojibwa Giwedin, meaning "north" or "north wind".

Keewatin grew slowly in its first years. In 1905 the St. Paul Mine started operations, followed three years later by the Bray Mine. Development increased when the Great Northern Railroad reached the community in 1909. Two more mines, the Mississippi and the Bennett, opened in 1910 and 1912. The Mesabi Chief Mine went into operation in 1927 and became Keewatin's largest mine. By 1940, the Mesabi Chief had shipped over six million five hundred thousand tons of iron ore.

In 1974, a group of companies jointly invested in the construction of the National Steel Pellet Taconite processing facility, visible north of town from Highway 169. Presently processing tons of taconite annually, the plant has given Keewatin a new lease on life.

Mesabi Trail

The Mesabi Trail® is located in northern Minnesota between Grand Rapids and Ely. When completed, the trail will traverse 132 miles and connect over 25 communities. Currently, there are over 66 miles of completed trail which is easily accessible from several entry point gateways. At this time, the longest paved sections run from Grand Rapids to Taconite - 13 miles; Nashwauk east to Kinney - 30 miles; and Mt. Iron to Eveleth - 13 miles.

O'Brien Recreation Area

The O'Brien Recreation Area that is maintained by the City is located three miles west of town and can be reached by car on the highway or by the three mile non-motorized hiking trail through the woods. O'Brien is a beautiful spot to spend an afternoon fishing. There is a boat landing for those who wish to explore all the coves along the shoreline. No boats with motors over 10 mph are allowed on O'Brien. If you don't have a boat but would still like to fish, a beautiful fishing pier has been provided by the City of Keewatin and the DNR. For those of you who like to swim, the City maintains a swimming beach and has lifeguards on duty for six weeks each summer. Next to the beach area there is a "Jungle Gym" for the children.

The Tackle Tamer neatly stores and organizes all sizes and lengths of leaders, including steel. The hooks are aligned in a single horizontal row for easy access and view. All sizes of hooks may be attached to eyelet. The point of the hook always faces into the material when the leader is wrapped around the Tackle Tamer. This makes it relatively snag-proof and safe. The leader end and the Tackle Tamer is hollow, which allows you to store sinkers, swivels, hooks, etc. .. This facet, along with being produced of plastic, makes the Tackle Tamer buoyant, provided excess weight isn't applied. To remove any line memory (coiling) from leader when removed from Tackle Tamer, simply leave hook attached to eyelet and run leader material between your thumb and index finger a few times.
