It is named after the
Ojibwe for the
Snake River — Kanabecosippi or
Ginebigo-ziibi — which flows through this
county.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,381 km² (533 mi²). 1,360 km² (525 mi²) of it is land and 22 km² (8 mi²) of it (1.58%) is water.
