Guide to Fertile Minnesota

Fertile is a city in Polk County, Minnesota. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.13 square miles (5.52 km2), all of it land. The area east, south, and southwest of Fertile are hilly while the areas to the north and west of Fertile are very flat and good for agriculture. Minnesota Highway 32 and Minnesota Highway 102 are two of the main routes in the community. The Agassiz Recreational Trail, a 53 mile multi-use trail built on an abandoned railroad grade passes through the city.

FERTILE, a city in sections 20 and 21 of Garfield, was named for Fertile village of Worth County in northern Iowa, whence some of its first settlers came. The city was incorporated as a village on May 22, 1888; it was first settled in 1879 and was platted on May 25, 1887, by James B. and Caroline F. Holms of Minneapolis, owners of the property, as 19 blocks with the Duluth, Crookston and Northern Railroad tracks through the middle and a public park in the southwest corner. John S. LaDue had a grocery store in LaDue Grove, three miles west of Fertile, where he was first postmaster when the post office began in 1881; he moved it to the townsite in 1887.
