Courtland is a city in Nicollet County, Minnesota. US Highway 14 is a main route in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.64 square miles (6.84 km2), all of it land. The elevation is 935 ft (285 m) above sea level.

As of the census of 2010, there were 611 people, 237 households, and 176 families residing in the city. The population density was 231.4 inhabitants per square mile (89.3/km2). There were 251 housing units at an average density of 95.1 per square mile (36.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 99.0% White, 0.2% African American, 0.7% Asian, and 0.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.

There were 237 households of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.1% were married couples living together, 3.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 25.7% were non-families. 19.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 2.96.

The median age in the city was 37.7 years. 24.4% of residents were under the age of 18; 5.8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 30.3% were from 25 to 44; 30.3% were from 45 to 64; and 9.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.6% male and 49.4% female.

COURTLAND Township, organized in 1858, was then called Hilo, from its post office established in 1856, which received that name from a bay and town in Hawaii. It was renamed in 1865 for Cortland County and its county seat in New York, whence some of its settlers came. A city in sections 5-8, having the same name, designated as a railway station in 1872, was platted February 14, 1882, and incorporated as a village on December 3, 1892. The post office was first established in the home of William Duprey as Hilo, 1856-64, and was reestablished in 1866 as Courtland, although the spelling was Cortland until 1874. By 1882, the village had become a trade center with a number of businesses, a hotel, a creamery, an elevator, and a depot of the Winona and St. Peter Railroad.
