History:

COMSTOCK, a city in Holy Cross Township, sections 21 and 28, was named in honor of Solomon Gilman Comstock of Moorhead, for whom also a township in Marshall County was named. He was born in Argyle, Maine, May 9, 1842; came to Minnesota in 1869, settling in Moorhead; was admitted to the bar in 1871; was a representative in the state legislature, 1876-77 and 1879-81; was a state senator, 1883-87; and was a representative in Congress, 1889-91. The city was incorporated on November 7, 1921, and separated from the township on March 18, 1926; it began in 1889 when David Askegaard moved his grain warehouse to the Comstock Siding in section 21; he built his home in 1890 and the first store in 1891; Askegaard also had a lumberyard, a creamery, and a potato warehouse, and served as postmaster when the post office was established in 1890.
