History:

BYRON, a city in sections 29 and 32 in Kalmar Township, platted in 1864, incorporated on February 12, 1873, and separated from the township in 1912, was named at the suggestion of G. W. Van Dusen, an early grain buyer, for his former home, Port Byron, N.Y. (W. H. Stennett, Origin of the Place Names of the Chicago and Northwestern Railway, 1908, p. 50). The post office was first named Bear Grove, 1857-68, for the numerous bears found in the vicinity; the village had a station of the Chicago and North Western Railway.

The Dr. Paul E. Zollman Zoo house's over 30 species of wild animals native to Minnesota. Many of the zoo creatures have physical injuries that have rendered them non-releasable, while others are surplus zoo animals from other facilities. In some cases, animals are purchased from licensed animal farms with donation funds set aside for such purposes. The zoo is named after Dr. Paul Zollman, DVM, in recognition of his dedication to Olmsted County Parks and for his steadfast belief in compassionate animal care and environmental education

On a gently rolling canvas dotted with thick stands of trees, meandering creeks and handsome pockets of grassy wetlands, architects John Fought and Tom Lehman have painted a glorious picture. Impeccable grooming, strategic bunkering and classic shotmaking options further define the scene. From the back tees, Somerby stretches 7,209 yards, providing the low handicap golfer with a rigorous test of golf. However, Fought and Lehman created the golf course with five sets of tees, giving players of all abilities a chance at par. While the slope and course ratings tell a story that Somerby will not be conquered easily, the course is eminently fair.
