| Appleton is geographically located in western Minnesota approximately 150 miles due west of Minneapolis/St. Paul, 150 miles northeast of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and 150 miles southeast of Fargo, North Dakota. Appleton is in the heart of prime western Minnesota farm land and hunting grounds and is at the southern edge of the Western Lakes Region of Minnesota. Appleton is bordered by the Lac Qui Parle State Wildlife Refuge and the Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge. Both offer some of the state's best waterfowl, big game and upland game hunting grounds. The two refuges include two large lakes: Lac Qui Parle and Big Stone Lakes, which offer excellent fishing opportunities. Appleton also has a golf course, municipal campground and swimming pool, nature park, tennis courts, basketball courts, parks and picnic area, and baseball/softball fields. Appleton is a city in Swift County, Minnesota. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.92 square miles, of which, 1.87 square miles of it is land and 0.05 square miles of it is water. The Pomme de Terre River flows through the city. U.S. Route 59 and Minnesota State Highways 7 and 119 are three of the main routes in the city.

As of the census of 2020, there were 1,392 people, 655 households, and 322 families residing in the city. The population density was 744.4 inhabitants per square mile. There were 800 housing units at an average density of 427.8 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 81.3% White, 0.9% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 9.6% Hawaian, 1.5% from other races, and 5.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.5% of the population.
There were 625 households of which 26.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.1% were married couples living together, 30.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 25.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 42.1% were non-families. 40.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.87.
The median age in the city was 32.9 years. 22.9% of residents were under the age of 18; 5.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 20.8% were from 25 to 44; 26.24% were from 45 to 64; and 24.8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.0% male and 51.0% female.
The median household income was $35,069. The poverty rate was 23.1%. 13.5% of residents had a bachelors degree or higher. The median rent was $482 and 64.7% owned their homes. The average value of a housing unit was $54,300..
