Council OKs fee increases 

Water customers and builders in International Falls have new water rates and building and zoning permit fees, following the approval of the Falls City Council Tuesday. The building and zoning fees were approved on a 4-1 vote, with Councilor Keysha Pearson voting no, as she did Jan. 2 at the first hearing and reading of the proposed ordinance amendment, reported city Administrator Ken Anderson.

For deer, so far, so good this winter 

The winter severity index for the International Falls area was at 27 on Wednesday, reports Larry Petersen, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources local area wildlife manager. The winter severity index, or WSI, is a standardized number resource managers use when considering impacts of the winter on deer, said Petersen.

Council moves toward new rates, fees 

International Falls water customers will see an increase in rates based on the city's aging water infrastructure needs and a law that requires "conservation" rates in Minnesota. The International Falls City Council last week approved the first step in raising the rates.

Olson to resign as Environmental Services Director 

The Koochiching County Board Tuesday accepted the resignation of a long-time department director who has played roles in a number of large projects. Commissioners thanked Olson for his ongoing support of county projects, "indispensability and contributions to the county and to the taxpayers" of Koochiching County, reported county Administration Director Jenny Herman.

State launches task force on housing 

The timing coincides with efforts in Borderland to determine housing needs in Koochiching County and find ways to meet those needs. Dayton's nonpartisan task force, comprised of experts and advocates from across Minnesota, will develop solutions to alleviate Minnesota's housing challenge, and connect more Minnesota families with good places to live.

Three safe after truck breaks through ice 

Three people were uninjured Wednesday when their pickup broke through the ice on Rainy Lake's Harrison Bay, near Dryweed Island,Voyageurs National Park staff confirmed this morning. VNP Superintendent Bob DeGross said the truck remains on the ice, as conditions now do not allow for it to be removed.

Nevanen: KEDA bullish for 2018 

A number of discussions by the Koochiching Economic Development Authority Board last week led the agency's director to voice optimism for the coming year. Nevanen recalled the meeting covered several agenda items that should yield results in 2018, including ongoing discussions about housing needs by the Koochiching County Housing Collaborative.

Local meth source: South of the border 

Crime tape placed around residences where people have been arrested for methamphetamine doesn't necessarily mean meth was being manufactured there, noted the Koochiching County sheriff. Instead, it's often used to keep people out if conditions inside are unfit for people to reside.
