Looking Back: Firemen tour Monahan art gallery after fire 

Captain Joseph Roberts recently graduated from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif., after studying Russian Language for the past year. He now is attending the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch, Germany, where he will continue with Russian Language Studies in addition to traveling and living in Russia or Eastern Bloc countries for six of the next 18 months.

Fort Frances LGBTQ2 group prepares for cross-border pride march 

The LGBTQ2 community in Fort Frances, Ont., are joining forces this weekend with our American neighbours for the first ever cross-border Pride celebration. "This is the first time that the Borderland community has come together as a whole to celebrate LGBTQ2 pride," said Borderland Pride co-chair Douglas Judson.

Border patrol seizes 60,000 mermaid dolls at International Falls port 

Federal agents have seized more than 60,000 counterfeit mermaid dolls destined for the Koochiching County port city of Ranier. U.S. Customs and Border Protection's International Falls office reported the seizure of the dolls in late June.

Koochiching County Board agrees to move forward with CR 24 project grant 

Southbound Canadian National Railway trains often block the dead-end County Road 24, also known as the Van Lynn Road. County officials have proposed construction of an overpass to carry vehicle traffic over the railroad tracks and a connector road that would allow vehicles to exit that road onto Highway 11 east of Ranier.

SOS receive grant from Minneapolis group 

A Minneapolis-based human services advocacy group recently awarded Servants of Shelter of Koochiching County with a $3,500 grant to help it meet the most basic needs of its guests. Each year Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless supports more than 200 homeless shelters and food shelves like Servants of Shelter throughout urban, suburban, and rural Minnesota, said Allison Kanyetzny, OYH program associate, in a news release.

Our View: Next step is up to us 

And we encourage people he may contact to be forthcoming with information so he may provide a true picture of who we are, what kind of housing we now have, what kind of housing we need now and in the future, and how we can get to the point where we can meet that need. Griesert will start collecting information for a comprehensive housing study for Koochiching County after July 4 when he'll be making phone calls, meeting with individuals and groups, and driving around the county conducting "windshield" condition surveys.
