Looking Back: Ketola's and Wolfe Hardware celebrate birthdays 

A group of Rainy River Community College students marched to downtown in a show of support for the college on a day proclaimed Rainy River Community College day by the City of International Falls. Organized by the Area College Choices Encourage Student Support group, the march was followed by a picnic at Smokey Bear Park.

'A humbling honor' - Tom and Jane Barthell are citizens of the year 

Tom and Jane Barthell were supposed to be talking about their volunteer efforts and accomplishments, but they instead raved about their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and all they have achieved. It perfectly demonstrated the reason the compassionate, kind and selfless-natured couple were chosen to be the International Falls Area Chamber of Commerce 2018 citizens of the year.

Council conducts health care job fair 

The Koochiching County Advisory Council will host a health care job fair from 3-6 p.m. April 26 at Rainy River Community College. The event is free and open to the public.

'History on Tap' takes it to the people 

Koochiching County Historical Society has teamed with a local brewing company to present "History on Tap," a series that brings local history to the people. This next session, April 12, at Loony's Brew in Ranier, continues a look at "Women in the Wild: Stories of Pioneer Women in Border Country."

Co-op to share ways to manage wild parsnip, other invasive weeds 

An April 17 open house will introduce the Koochiching County Cooperative Weed Management Area, a way to share information about managing the spread of wild parsnip, hawkweed and other noxious weeds. Do you want to know about how to prevent the spread of wild parsnip? Or learn how to manage the invasive species that seems to be appearing all over Koochiching County? You can do just that at a cooperative weed management open house from 4-6 p.m. April 17 at the Littlefork Community Building, 220 Main Street, Littlefork.

DNR commissioner: Keeping what we've got 

The DNR office on Highway 11 east, International Falls, is among the four DNR buildings in Koochiching County listed as having poor components. There are 2,045 DNR buildings with poor components and 253 with unacceptable components.

Waiting for spring; preparing for severe weather 

Another sign of spring is the preparations made for severe weather, brought to the public through Severe Weather Awareness Week by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, in partnership with the National Weather Service and other state and local government agencies sponsors. Willi Kostiuk, emergency management coordinator with the Koochiching County Sheriffs Office, provided information to The Journal he said is valuable to the community.

Ernest Oberholtzer Foundation receives $10,000 

The Minnesota Historical Society announced last week 36 recipients of 38 Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Small Grants, $10,000 and less, totaling $319,701 in 23 counties, were awarded. The Ernest C. Oberholtzer Foundation in Koochiching County was one of the recipients, receiving $10,000 to provide better organization of the museum's photography collection, allowing for greater public access to the community's historic resources, said a press release.

KEDA Board hears need for volunteers 

The Koochiching Economic Development Authority Board Wednesday heard from JoAnn Smith about Junior Achievement, the nation's largest organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future and make smart academic and economic choices. Smith leads the Small Business Development Center under the umbrella of the KEDA.

Gouin named new ESD director 

Matt Gouin Tuesday was named director of Koochiching County Environmental Services. He has worked for several years in the county's survey office.
