Stewartville woman enters not guilty pleas in fatal crash 

A Stewartville woman pleaded not guilty Monday to nine charges in connection to an October crash in Fillmore County that left a woman dead. Sarah Nichole Sexton, 38, pleaded not guilty in Fillmore County District Court to felony second-degree manslaughter, criminal vehicular homicide, two counts of felony criminal vehicular operation as well as five traffic gross misdemeanor, misdemeanor and petty misdemeanor charges.

Donation to Preston Veterans Home approved 

Seven of the 13 counties in southeastern Minnesota have so far approved donations to the home, Veterans Service Officer Todd Nelson told commissioners. Preston was one of three sites in greater Minnesota chosen for construction of a new veterans home.

Minnesota Pollution Control Agency chief hears a wave of worry over Fillmore County feedlot plan 

Foes of a 5,000-hog farm in Fillmore County flooded the meeting in Mabel, Minn., near the Iowa border. Opponents of a proposed hog feedlot in Fillmore County may not get the full environmental review they're demanding, but one thing is clear: They've got the attention of the state's top pollution official.

Decision on Environmental Impact Statement for Fillmore Co. Hog Farm Proposal Expected This Month 

Amid calls for another look at a controversial hog farm proposal in rural Fillmore County, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Commissioner John Stine reaffirmed his agency's commitment to rule on whether to require an environmental impact statement be done by the end of the year. Stine's comments came at a heated public meeting in Mabel Tuesday night, in which dozens spoke against the proposed 5,000-head hog facility project in Newburg Township.

Weeklong trial continues for Fillmore Amish 

For the last week, four members of the Swartzentruber Amish community have listened to arguments on whether their religious beliefs would allow them to not comply with state wastewater regulations. Four men, Ammon Swartzentruber, Menno Mast, Ammo Mast and Sam Miller, filed a suit in April 2017 against the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and Fillmore County over concerns that an ongoing effort by the state agency and the county to require them to install a wastewater system for graywater would go against their religious faith.

DNR to intensify fight against CWD in southeastern Minn. 

Prompting the announcement, the DNR said, are 11 new cases of CWD infected deer that have been found this fall in the southeast in and around a special disease management zone in Fillmore County. Because the DNR believes the only way to stop the spread of CWD is to minimize the number of deer in the area for the time being, the agency will offer two special December hunts, in addition to providing shooting permits to landowners and holding a sharpshooter culling effort in January.

In southeastern Minnesota's karst country, feedlot proposal has neighbors riled 

A swine feedlot proposed for Fillmore County in southeastern Minnesota has generated such intense local reaction that state regulators have reopened the period for public comments and, in an unusual step, scheduled a second public meeting to air new environmental research. "In my 10 years with the agency, this is the first time I've done a second public information meeting for the same project," said Catherine Rofshus, a spokeswoman for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency .

Iowa woman charged with financial exploitation 

An Iowa woman made her first appearance in Fillmore County District Court Monday on charges that she financially exploited two vulnerable adults out of more than $5,000. Ashley Marie Evenson, 26, has been charged with two felony counts of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult, two felony counts of theft, a gross misdemeanor charge of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult and a gross misdemeanor theft charge.

Another hearing set on proposed Mabel swine facility 

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency will hold a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 4 to discuss findings concerning the proposed Catalpa Ag swine facility. The meeting, which will take place at the Mabel Community Center, 201 Main St. South, will present findings determined by the MPCA.
