Cass County Board: Despite area trends, STS program thriving in Cass 

"Our STS is thriving," Chief Deputy Erick Hoglund told the Cass County Board Tuesday, also noting several neighboring county STS programs have declined and closed. The program is designed to enable low-risk offenders to work on a deputy-supervised crew to work off fines or in place of jail time.

Cass County Board: Changes approved for land reclassification 

Cass County Board adopted changes Tuesday to the countywide land use ordinance covering the process for obtaining land reclassification. Under changes the county began this summer, applicants now file their application with Environmental Services Department.

Girl's body found on Leech Lake Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota 

CASS LAKE, Minn.-A girl's body was found last Friday morning in Cass Lake on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota. Cass County Sheriff's Office staff and other law enforcement officers were told of a body found shortly after 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, and discovered a "deceased juvenile female" within the city limits of Cass Lake.

Truck launches over road approach, hits power pole in mid air, injures 2 

Two women were injured Sunday when the Ford truck they were in rear-ended a GMC Acadia, which resulted in the Ford going into a ditch, launching over a road approach and hitting a power pole in mid-air before landing in a private field.

Rash of burglaries connected to 2 suspects 

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office arrested 37-year-old Charles Weber of Milaca Friday, and he was charged with second-degree burglary Tuesday in Crow Wing County District Court in Brainerd.

Those rules call for meeting 9 a.m. the first Tuesday each month at the courthouse in Walker and third Tuesday-January through April and October through December-at the land department building in Backus.

Holidays bring burglaries, upsetting any good cheer 

With Christmas looming on the calendar, residents discovered thieves had invaded their properties and made off with valuable items - from County Highway 30 by Crosby, to Spencer Road outside of Brainerd, to Marsh Point near Aitkin. Illustration The Brainerd lakes area saw a jump in burglaries over the holiday weekend, with Crow Wing County Sheriff's deputies responding to four reports of break-ins, as well as assisting in two additional incidences in Aitkin and Cass counties.

The Cass County Board on Tuesday, Dec. 19, set the county's final 2018 levy at $22,307,860.

Snowmobile goes through ice on Lake Roosevelt 

A snowmobiler and sled broke through the ice on Lake Roosevelt at the Highway 6 channel in Outing on Friday, December 21. The rider made it safely to shore but the snowmobile was not as lucky as it sank approximately ten feet below the surface. The Cass County Sheriff's department oversaw the recovery effort on Saturday afternoon.
