Officials seek missing teen boy 

Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch reported the Cass County Sheriff's Office is investigating a report of a missing teen boy runaway from the rural Motley area. The missing boy was identified as Dylan Joseph Vorbeck, 15, of rural Motley.

Layman seeks re-election to Legislature 

State Rep. Sandy Layman, R-Cohasset, announced Saturday that she will seek re-election this fall for a second term in the Minnesota House of Representatives. She represents House District 5B, which includes a portion of Cass County and the majority of Itasca County.

MnDOT plans another closure of Highway 37126 min ago 

Traffic moves along Highway 371 near Backus Thursday afternoon. The highway is slated for a construction project from Backus to Hackensack and expected to close for five weeks after Labor Day.

Zachary Todd Anderson sentenced to life without possibility of release 

Cass County Attorney Benjamin Lindstrom reports that on March 2, 2018 Defendant Zachary Todd Anderson appeared in Cass County District Court and entered a plea of guilty to committing Murder in the First Degree involving Criminal Sexual Conduct in the First Degree with sexual penetration. This plea related to the abduction, sexual assault, and murder of a five-year-old child from Meeker County and the disposal of her body in Cass County.

Preliminary results show Akeley woman died of hypothermia 

Preliminary autopsy results for the pregnant woman whose body was found Feb. 17 in the Chippewa National Forest showed hypothermia as the cause of death, the Cass County Sheriff's Office reported.

Man pleads guilty to killing 5-year-old Watkins girl 

A 27-year-old Coon Rapids man on Friday admitted to killing 5-year-old Alayna Jeanne Ertl of Watkins in the summer of 2016. Zachary Todd Anderson was scheduled to appear Friday in a Cass County District Courtroom in Walker for a pre-trial hearing in front of Judge Jana M. Austad.

Man sentenced to life for child abduction, strangulation 

A man accused of abducting and killing a 5-year-old girl from central Minnesota has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. Zachary Todd Anderson was originally charged with 19 counts for the death of Alayna Ertl.

Nisswa: Council OKs Gull Lake Trail route 3-1, Location not set in stone; citizen input wanted 

After agreeing on the importance of citizen input regarding the location of a Gull Lake Trail through Nisswa, the city council approved a tentative route to get the process going and to pursue funding opportunities. Mayor Fred Heidmann cast the lone dissenting vote Wednesday, Feb. 21, after reading a lengthy letter explaining that he fully supports the trail system but believes the route through Nisswa should go through more neighborhoods.

Faith in Action receives Aging Services Grant 

Faith in Action for Cass County was awarded a grant from Older Americans Act to provide services to older adults living in Central Minnesota during 2018. This grant provides reimbursement for program services including transportation to and from doctor's appointments, chores and homemaker services, and accessibility modifications such as wheelchair ramps and railings.
