Memorial Day Programs 2018 

In 1999 Congress ensured that the nation was given the opportunity to show their appreciation publicly for troops past and present. May is Military Appreciation Month because there are many days marked to note our military's achievements including: Silver Star Service Banner Day , Loyalty Day , Victory in Europe Day commemorating the end of WWII in Europe in 1945 , Children of Fallen Patriots Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day , Armed Forces Week , Armed Forces Day , Maritime Day , and Memorial Day ends the month with a day to remember the service and sacrifice of those who gave all.

Cat lovers concerned tigers coming to Minnesota are too fat 

This year, they got their Facebook followers excited for the summer -- a concept so tantalizingly removed from what has been a snowy April -- with a sneak peek at one of their attractions. Look out, Willmar: they've got tigers.

Four Minnesota State two-year colleges get new leaders 

This week, the board of trustees approved the appointments of Carrie Brimhall as president of Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Craig Johnson as president of Ridgewater College, and Michael Berndt as interim president of two schools, Dakota County Technical College and Inver Hills Community College. Brimhall has been vice president of academic affairs at Minnesota State Community and Technical College since 2014.

Farm-Rite Hosts Annual Open House in Willmar, Minn. 

A huge crowd battled unseasonably cold temperatures on April 6 for the Farm-Rite open house in Willmar, Minn. Product representatives and a great team of employees were on hand to meet and greet customers.

Historic storm for some -- average for others: Montevideo, Minn.,... 

During Saturday's heavy snowfall, this cardinal was a frequent visitor at a bird feeder one mile north of Willmar, Minn. A farm auction went on Saturday morning, April 14, near Spicer, Minn., despite the blizzard.

The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations wants a Willmar man charged with a hate crime after an incident at a farmer's market last weekend.

Minnesota man, accused of drinking, crashes into farm equipment along highway 

A Willmar man was injured Wednesday afternoon when the pickup he was driving left the road and crashed into a row of farm equipment that was lined up in front of a Willmar business. According to the State Patrol, Derek Scott Heike, 27, was driving a 2012 Dodge Ram east on Highway 12 when he lost control of the vehicle on a curve and the truck went off the road and struck machinery at Farm-Rite Equipment.

Lyon County Board hears public comment on interchange proposals 

The turnout was small. But at a public comment session held Tuesday morning, Lyon County commissioners did get some of the feedback they were hoping for on proposed interchanges on Minnesota Highway 23. Commissioners heard from representatives of Marshall schools, Southwest Minnesota State University and the Marshall Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as written comments from Lyon County residents.

Anderson: My stance on farm tiling issue generated strong response 

AT ISSUE: Modest stream buffers won't counteract the effects of extreme subsurface drainage tiling, which is common in southern and western Minnesota. Last Sunday I published on these pages a column about farmland drainage and specifically about pattern tiling, which has become commonplace throughout Minnesota in recent decades to the detriment, I said, of many rivers, lakes and lands.

Fire damages south-central Minnesota grain elevator morning 

Fire departments from 10 communities responded to a fire early Friday, March 30, at a grain elevator in south-central Minnesota. The fire was at the Farmers Cooperative Elevator's northern location on the west edge of Hanley Falls, about 20 miles northeast of Marshall.
