Task force recommends ways to address critical shortage of affordable housing 

An affordable housing task force appointed last year by Gov. Mark Dayton is recommending broad changes in funding, technology and regulation to meet a statewide demand for affordable housing. The report says economic growth depends on adequate affordable housing for workers, and that for the past decade Minnesota home construction hasn't kept up with demand.

Candidate filing periods to open 

Those interested in serving on the Jackson County Central or Heron Lake-Okabena boards of education or in municipal government in the cities of Lakefield, Okabena, Heron Lake or Wilder have until Aug. 14 to file their candidacy. Filing periods for the various governing boards will open Tuesday morning.

Postponed by floods, Walnut Grove's Wilder Pageant set to open this weekend 

Cast and crew are working feverishly between rehearsals this week to remove a thick scum of flood mud coating the stage of the popular Wilder Pageant in Walnut Grove, Minn., ahead of Thursday's opening performance. The family-oriented outdoor drama based on the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder was to have opened last Friday, but the normally tame Plum Creek swelled way beyond its banks, swamping the grounds a mile west of town and putting center stage under water.

Blandin Foundation awards $3.3 million in grants, names new trustees 

Trustees of Blandin Foundation elected three new board members and approved 48 grants totaling $3,282,607 during their quarterly meeting on Monday, June 25 in Grand Rapids. Brian Nicklason, chair of the Foundation's board of trustees, announced that three Itasca County residents will join the Foundation's 12-member board in January 2019: Peter Birkey, Laura Connelly and Kayla Schubert-Aubid.
