Week of wintry weather proves wild ... 

A week of wintry weather proved a wild one for local emergency response agencies, as the Minnesota State Patrol, Jackson County Sheriff's Office and fire departments and ambulance crews from across the county were kept busy last week responding to stranded motorists and injured accident victims. The local sheriff's office responded to 14 weather-related incidents from last Monday to this past Sunday, a half-dozen of which were related to assisting the state patrol.

Answer Man: The cold calculations behind the homeless warming center 

Dear Answer Man, with it being exceptionally cold lately, this issue has been making me wonder - what is the difference between 5 above zero and 5 below zero? I don't know about you, but anything under 32 degrees is cold for me. I have read in your paper that the city is opening its homeless shelters for individuals who are homeless ONLY if it's below zero.

More townships, cities mull merits ... 

More Jackson County townships - and even some cities - are poised to replace Election Day voting with mail-in balloting. Jackson County Auditor/Treasurer Kevin Nordquist said Belmont and Rost townships, along with the city of Alpha, will join Heron Lake Township in conducting mail-in balloting next November.
