BLET President Pierce addresses TCRC delegates in Vancouver 

BLET National President Dennis R. Pierce was the opening speaker today as the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference's Fourth Quadrennial Convention got underway in Vancouver, B.C. Speaking at the invitation of TCRC President Douglas Finnson, President Pierce described the BLET's long history with Canada, which dates back nearly 153 years. The first Canadian Division of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers was founded in Toronto on December 5, 1865.

The Acro Personalized Malthouse allows beer lovers to germinate small batches of grain without the expense of industrial operations. The first set of machines slid off the assembly line and shipped to customers in early August.

Thief River Falls man charged with touching child inappropriately Tuesday, August 28 

Thirty-three-year-old Derek Liam of Thief River Falls made a court appearance Monday on one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. Court records allege Liam touched the boy under 13 in a Thief River Falls apartment in March.

Odd, potentially toxic algae infests western Minn. waters 

Outbreaks of an unusual and potentially toxic blue-green algae have been reported in at least five western Minnesota counties, including in Maplewood State Park in Otter Tail County, conservation officials said last week. The blue-green algae can be toxic, although tests so far haven't found toxic levels in any of the infested waterways, said Tim James, a project manager with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in Detroit Lakes.
