For venues that buy the vouchers in bulk from the local authority to hand out for free to their guests, the cost will be rising by thousands of pounds extra every year.

Candidate filing update 

The candidate filing period for elected office opened on Tuesday, May 22 and closes on Tuesday, June 5 at 5 p.m. The general election will be held Nov. 6. The updates below are as of 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29. Another update will be included in the June 4 Free Star with the final results in the June 7 Pipestone County Star.

Grave markers placed for long-deceased veterans at Pine River cemetery 

Tim Switajewski , of the Pine River American Legion, and Stephen Sether, of the Jenkins VFW, Pine River American Legion Post and Cass County Veterans Services, place a headstone for Kenneth DeGroot, one of three veterans who went many years without proper markers.

The Val Johnson Incident: a Ufo encounter that made Marshall County famous 

It was late August in Marshall County, 1979. Deputy sheriff Val Johnson was on patrol in his Ford LTD at 1:30 a.m., heading out on County Road 5. He got about 10 miles away from Stephen when he saw a light through the driver's side window.

Extended-stay hotel planned on long-vacant airport property 

The JR Hospitality project in the southeast quadrant of Old Shakopee Road East and Killebrew Drive would be the first Hyatt House extended-stay hotel in Minnesota. JR Hospitality has asked the Bloomington City Council to rezone several properties along Old Shakopee Road East between Killebrew Drive and 86th Street East, where the developer wants to build a 150-unit Hyatt House hotel.

Motorcyclist avoids semi, crashes into median 

A motorcyclist moved to avoid a semi tractor-trailer at about 1:22 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 90, but crashed when the bike hit the median. Stephen Craig Wheeler, 60, of Winona, was eastbound on I-90 near the Enterprise Rest Area, about a mile east of the Lewiston exit, when his motorcycle was forced into the median by an eastbound semi.
