Nature Nut: Loons aren't a common sight in our area 

Last Saturday I slowly drove along the West side of Silver Lake looking for something on the water different than the geese and a handful of different varieties of ducks. I knew it would be low in the water and hard to see, and came up empty on my first drive through.

Does Rochester need a park hunting policy? 

Rochester Park Board Member Vickie Anderson said she was surprised to be discussing a policy to keep hunting out of city parks. Mike Nigbur, Rochester's park and forestry division head, said Department of Natural Resources regulations allow bow hunting in remote parts of Quarry Hill Park.

Police Logs 

Ricky Allen Thompson, 55, of Nicollet driving a 2009 Volkswagne Routan, was facing the wrong way on Hwy 111 southbound shoulder to get his mail. Steven Richard Hackbarth, 53, of Silver Lake, was traveling northbound on Hwy 111 in a 1996 GMC Jimmy when the two vehicles collided.

Sondra Matthiesen 

Sondra Matthiesen died peacefully February 2, 2018 at her home, surrounded by family after a courageous battle with a rare form of lung cancer. Sondra Jean Matthiesen was born October 5, 1959, in Pipestone, Minn., to Menferd and Lois Monger.
