Students: Register now for annual Inventors Fair 

The Inventors Fair is geared toward southeastern Minnesota students in grades four through 12. It rewards students for coming up with creative solutions to problems, big or small. This year's fair will be from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. April 14 at Autumn Ridge Church in southwest Rochester.

Our View: Hopes rise for RCTC, area bonding projects 

In November, the Minnesota Department of Management and Budget projected a $188 million deficit in the state's general fund by mid-2019 without a course correction in the legislative session that begins Tuesday. That cast a shadow over any grand plans for capital projects, especially with the uncertainty of impacts from the federal tax overhaul in December, and with growing concern about the direction of the economy.

Is the Days Inn a historic landmark? 

The former Hotel Carlton on West Center Street at First Avenue Northwest in Rochester, as it looked in about 1925. Two more stories were added in 1927.

Heard on the Street: Mayo credit union paid $1.68 million for commercial plaza 

The Mayo Employees Federal Credit Union purchased a Second Street commercial center next to its Rochester headquarters for $1.68 million in cash last week. The credit union bought the 12,400-square-foot Corporate Gardens Plaza complex at 2215 Second St. SW on Feb. 15. The 18-year-old Corporate Gardens houses multiple tenants, including Joe's Liquors and Southwest Chiropractic & Rehabilitation .

Two sentenced in May 17 shooting 

Two Rochester men allegedly involved in a May 2017 shooting in a busy parking have been convicted in the case. Abdi Omar Abukar, 22, was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm, a felony, and sentenced to 60 months in Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud, concurrent with another sentence he's serving, according to court documents.

Lilapalooza fundraiser set for March 3 

A fundraiser for Lila Usry will feature food and local bands and musicians. Lilapalooza will begin at 2 p.m, Saturday, March 3, at Town Creek Farm Pavilion.

Third Candidate Enters Rochester Mayoral Race 

A Rochester native and retired engineer has become the third person to officially seek the mayor's chair in the 2018 election cycle. Brent "B.W." Coggins held a small announcement ceremony Sunday afternoon at the Willow Creek Reservoir Park, a project he helped design.

Heard on the Street: 'Hijab-friendly' salon to blow into Peace Plaza 

Tammie Krebsbach has signed a lease to open Blow - A Dry Bar and Lounge in the 100 First Avenue complex on the Peace Plaza spot last occupied by Exquisite Leather and Luggage Boutique , as well as the adjacent Love From Minnesota souvenir spot. She hopes to open by late April or early May. Darci Fenske , of Paramark Real Estate , represented Blow in the real estate deal.
