Our View: ICE looks at Pine Island for detention center 

The Karnes County, Texas, Civil Detention Center is privately owned by GEO Group, which contracts with ICE. Another private prison operator, Management and Training Corp., has proposed building a 640-bed detention center in Pine Island for ICE detainees.

Companies propose immigration detention centers for Midwest 

Companies and local governments have proposed building new immigration detention centers in Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois and Indiana, responding to a request from Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials stepping up arrests in the center of the country. The proposals, most by for-profit corrections contractors, were submitted to ICE after it put out a request in October for detention sites near Chicago, Detroit, Salt Lake City and St. Paul, Minnesota.

Montana rescuers pulled a man from surging floodwaters as authorities issued new evacuation orders and water continued to rise in rivers and streams across the western half of the state. A federal appeals court has reinstated a challenge to Seattle's first-in-the-nation law allowing drivers of ride-hailing companies such as Uber and Lyft to unionize.

Heard on the Street: Northwest Rochester animal clinic to open 

A new veterinarian clinic - the Med City Animal Hospital - is opening in northwest Rochester, and it's in a spot already familiar to many local pet owners. Veterinary Dr. Nate Mannix is renovating and updating the former home of the Assisi Drive Animal Hospital at 1111 14th St. NW with plans to open later this month.

Heard on the Street: New flavors on the way to farmers market 

If you become hungry at the Rochester Farmers Market this Saturday, you'll have some new choices for a quick breakfast or lunch along with the wide variety of locally raised produce and meat from dozens of producers. Two new vendors - Infuzn Foods, of Pine Island, and CrAape Jean Luc, of Winona - will join the mix of the three established concession booths at the market from 7:30 a.m. to noon at Fourth Street and Fourth Avenue Southeast.

Winds fan flames across SE Minnesota 

Stewartville firefighters work to extinguish a brush fire near the Stewartville dump at 943 2nd Ave. SW Sunday afternoon. Flames were reported as high as 15 feet.
