Constituent refiles dismissed suit against Fischbach 

A constituent who sued in January to oust Sen./Lt. Gov. Michelle Fischbach, R-Paynesville, from her Senate seat has refiled essentially the same action that a judge dismissed without prejudice just nine weeks ago.

Murdered Paynesville grandfather bailed out grandson in December 

A Paynesville man charged in the homicides of his grandparents last month in Stearns County was free on bail at the time from a 2017 case after his grandfather cosigned the bail bond. According to court documents, Thomas Bail Bonds Inc. had issued the $75,000 bond on behalf of Gregory Allen Scheel, who was charged in December with burglary, theft and escape from custody charges in Chippewa County.

Community support grows for central Minnesota family seriously injured in crash 

The New London and Spicer communities are rallying around the family of Tim and Heather Shumaker following a car accident this past week that injured the mother and three of her children, including two who were airlifted to a Twin Cities hospital with one still dealing with life-threatening injuries. Eleven-year-old Nate took the brunt of the impact with the semi and suffered internal injuries and brain trauma and late this week was "fighting" and trying to breath and move.

Grandson Arrested in Death of Elderly Paynesville Couple 

On Wednesday, March 21 at approximately 10:08 p.m., the Paynesville Police Department responded to a welfare check/missing persons report at 1525 W Mill Street. The reporting party, a niece, was concerned as Wilbert and Gloria Scheel had missed a dinner appointment at approximately 6 p.m. The niece tried to locate her aunt and uncle and when she was unsuccessful, she contacted the Paynesville Police Department.

5 people hurt when vehicle hits semi near Paynesville 

Check out this story on Five people were injured Wednesday morning after a van hit a Freightliner semi near Paynesville, according to a Minnesota State Patrol report. A 16-year-old was driving the Chrysler Town and Country, with three passengers, that was traveling east on Minnesota Highway 23. The van crossed the center line about 10:08 a.m. and struck a Freightliner semi head-on.

University of Minnesota researchers have reported limited success from an experiment to control an invasive weed in Lake Koronis near Paynesville. Researchers from the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Center have studying how to combat starry stonewort , which has been spread to 11 lakes across the state.

A 33-year-old central Minnesota man with a long criminal history was charged Monday with murdering his grandparents last week, a couple widely known and admired in their community. Gregory A. Scheel, who lived with his victims in Paynesville, was charged in Stearns County District Court with two counts of second-degree murder.

Man Charged With Murder In Grandparents' Deaths 

Last week, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension reported 93-year-old Wilbert Scheel, his wife 80-year-old Gloria Scheel missing. Authorities reported that they had last been seen at Teal's Market in Paynesville on March 21. Neighbors said the elder couple went there every Wednesday for senior day.

Grandson arrested for murder of Paynesville couple 

The medical examiner has ruled the deaths of an elderly Paynesville couple to be homicides, and their grandson has been arrested for two counts of second-degree intentional murder. Wilbert "Willie" A. Scheel, 93, and his 80-year-old wife, Gloria A. Scheel, were reported missing Wednesday, March 21, and two bodies were found at around 5 p.m. Thursday in a Toyota Prius on Kandiyohi County Road 5 east of Games Lake, according to a news release from the Stearns County Sheriff's Office and the Paynesville Police Department.
