Canadian wildfire smoke reduces air quality in Minnesota 

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an air quality alert for southwest, western and central Minnesota because of smoke from Canadian wildfires. The affected area includes Alexandria, Brainerd, Marshall, Ortonville, St. Cloud, and Worthington.

Passenger dies when motorcycle hits deer in Big Stone County 

The Minnesota State Patrol has released the name of a woman killed Saturday in western Minnesota's Big Stone County when the motorcycle she was a passenger on hit a deer and spun around, ejecting both her and the driver. Karen Kay Oakes, 56, of Ortonville, was killed just before 4 p.m. Saturday when the 2014 Harley-Davidson being driven by her husband, Thomas John Oakes, 57, hit the deer on Hwy.

Air quality alert issued for parts of western Minnesota 

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an air quality alert for western parts of the state because of smoke from Kansas fires. The affected areas listed in Saturday's alert include the Red Lake Indian Reservation and the cities of Ortonville, Fergus Falls, Moorhead, Detroit Lakes, East Grand Forks and Wheaton.

Anderson: DNR sets new rules for northern limits in three zones come May 

The intent of the new regulations, spread over three northern pike "zones,'' is to reduce the number of small "hammer-handle'' northerns that infest too many state lakes. Department of Natural Resources fisheries managers say excessive numbers of small northerns can cut into perch numbers, contribute to smaller crappies and sunnies, and reduce the effectiveness of walleye stocking.

Fire destroys rural Litchfield home 

A rural Litchfield home was destroyed by a fire that began in the chimney early yesterday morning. The Meeker County Sheriff's Office says at 3:12 a.m. they received a report of a chimney fire in the 57000 block of 226th Street, Litchfield Township.
