HL-O holiday concert next week 

Heron Lake-Okabena School students will treat music lovers to a holiday concert Tuesday evening in the HL-O High School gym in Okabena. The holiday band and choir concert begins at 7 p.m. Many different musical groups will be featured during the concert, including both the junior- and senior-high bands and choirs and a joined choir of the junior- and senior-high choirs, as well as a select choir.

After-school adventures fire up nex... 

For local students, the adventure begins when the school day ends, thanks to the Jackson County 4-H After-school Adventures program. The adventure series begins Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Riverside Elementary School in Jackson; Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Pleasantview Elementary School in Lakefield; and Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Heron Lake-Okabena Elementary School in Heron Lake.

Post was born to farm 

Jim Post was born on May 24, 1925, on the family farm his father, Albert, purchased in 1920 - some 89 acres in Rost Township bordering Ewington Township in southwest Jackson County. He spent his entire work life of 54 years living on and caring for that farm.

Enrollment flat as school begins 

Student enrollment at Jackson County Central and Heron Lake-Okabena schools on the first day of the fall semester Tuesday looks to be about on par with where it was last year. Preliminary Day 1 enrollment estimates at JCC last fall hovered in the 1,160-student range.

New faces as a new school year fire... 

Plenty of new faces will grace the hallways of Jackson County Central schools when classes begin on Tuesday, while things at Heron Lake-Okabena will look strikingly similar to last year. The JCC district welcomes 17 new teachers this fall - the largest crop of new teachers in recent memory.
