Commissioners give go-ahead to seek... 

Jackson County Commissioners have authorized the local sheriff's office to apply for grants that could help fund a school resource officer position for the Jackson County Central and Heron Lake-Okabena school districts. On Tuesday, Jackson County Sheriff Shawn Haken told commissioners he is keeping an eye on three potential funding sources - a longstanding federal grant program with which he is familiar, a $2 billion school safety allocation included in the latest federal spending bill and a $15.9 million pot of statewide school safety funds.

Milbrath nabs top businessman honor 

Okabena area native David Milbrath has been named the runner-up for Connect Business Magazine's Businessperson of the Year honor. Milbrath was recognized for his expertise in the field of asset management, having created more than $500 million of wealth for his clients since 1991 through his company, Prairie Plans Asset Management.

Schools move toward hiring armed of... 

Schools across Jackson County are taking steps toward hiring an armed school resource officer. The move comes on the heels of a series of school shootings nationwide, a pair of school shooting threats locally and as the state and federal government make increasing amounts of grant dollars available for such school security measures.

Spring concert to showcase hard wor... 

This week's spring concert at the Heron Lake-Okabena High School is an opportunity for the bands to showcase months of hard work on challenging pieces and for the high school choir to warm up for a future performance in Duluth. Show time is 7 p.m. today at the HL-O High School in Okabena.

A proactive approach to preventing ... 

In the wake of yet another high-profile school shooting - and the recent threat of one in Jackson - the Jackson County Sheriff's Office continues to take a proactive approach to prevention. Among the steps taken by the local sheriff's office in recent years is participation of officers in active-shooter training, training of local teachers and school staff in how to respond to an active-shooter situation and regular school patrols.
