Answering the call to help 

When the call went out that help was needed with a grain elevator fire in Northrop, Minnesota, over the New Years weekend, fire departments from around Minnesota responded. In fact, there were 53 fire departments and emergency units that answered the call, including six from Faribault County.

Engineer: Too cold for salt 

Martin County commissioners on Tuesday heard from County Engineer Kevin Peyman, who provided a highway department update, primarily involving work conditions due to recent snowfall, as well as keeping the roads safe in Northrop for emergency workers. "We stayed an hour late on Friday, and then Saturday everybody worked for about five hours and went out for three and a half hours on Sunday."

Truman council hears reports 

The Truman City Council on Monday heard quarterly reports from department heads, including Truman Fire Chief Dave Bentz, who spoke about events surrounding the Northrop fire that took place over the weekend. "Nobody was complaining about the weather or anything like that and that really struck me.

Elevator explosion followed by fire 

The day after an explosion tore the top off a grain elevator in Northrop, a fire broke out at the elevator about 5 a.m. Friday. Nearly 30 different fire, ambulance and police crews responded to the emergency, including the New Ulm Fire Department, which sent its aerial ladder truck and four crew members to assist.

Martin County Grain Elevator Explosion 

The Martin County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a grain elevator explosion located at 109 North Bridgeman in Northrop, Minnesota. The top portion of the grain elevator was blown apart and the debris damaged several nearby houses, businesses and vehicles.
