Martha Meade Kaemmer, Cooks of Crocus Hill co-founder and philanthropist, dies 

Martha Meade Kaemmer, co-founder of Cooks of Crocus Hill, was known for her wisdom, generous spirit and curiosity about food. For most of her adult life, even after she retired from the St. Paul-based kitchenware store, Kaemmer contributed to many local organizations and institutions, including the Minnesota Historical Society, the Minnesota Opera and her alma mater, Carleton College in Northfield, Minn.

Care packages let disadvantaged students know 'someone is rooting for them' 

Students Maggie Lindenfelser, Stephanie Garcia and Odalis Andrade are first-generation college students who have benefited from Northfield's TORCH program. The multipronged outreach to low-income and first-generation high schoolers makes sure students don't just graduate, but also see college in their future.

Hundreds of Minnesota students will walk out, rally for gun control... 

Harding High School students walked out of school for 17 minutes in honor of the 17 people who died a month ago in the Florida school shooting. Wednesday, March 14, 2018 in St. Paul, Minnesota.] For the second time in about a month, hundreds of Minnesota students will walk out of their classrooms on Friday to push for stricter gun control measures - marking the 19th anniversary of the deadly Columbine High School shooting.

Bridge Square Observance of Nakba May 12 

This year marks 70 years since the Nakba, the mass expulsion of Palestinian people and destruction of their homes in their native land.Northfielders for Justice in Palestine/Israel is commemorating the anniversary with a series of events. Each Friday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., supporters of a just peace in Palestine will gather at Bridge Square in Northfield in support of demonstrators in Gaza, now through May 11. Palestinians living in Gaza are marking the anniversary with a host of actions, starting with the March 30 "Great Return March," in which tens of thousands of them marched to the fence that separates the enclave from Israel.

Sweets and music coming to Staples April 29 

Anna Koopmann will perform 3 p.m. April 29 at Timbers Event Center in Staples, as part of the Staples Motley Area Arts Council's regular series. Casey Smithley also will be a featured musician.

Education Notebook: JM junior selected for Germany trip 

John Marshall junior Tyler Sandmeyer has earned a three-week trip to Deutschland this summer thanks to his mastery of the German language. Earlier this school year, Sandmeyer was declared to be the state's most qualified German student after completing an oral interview at the University of Minnesota.

US exhibition commemorates Rana Plaza victims 

A new exhibition in the United States is being held throughout the month of April to commemorate those that lost their lives and were injured during the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory building in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2013. The Price of Our Clothes exhibit will be on display in the Braucher Gallery at the Perlman Teaching Museum in Northfield, Minnesota, every day until 27 April.

Census 2020: Crucial--and Controversial 

The League of Women Voters of Northfield-Cannon Falls, in cooperation with the City of Northfield and Northfield Public Schools, invites the public to join neighbors in learning more about the direct importance of the 2020 U.S. Census to Northfield.At 7 p.m. on Monday, April 16, in the Northfield High School auditorium, State Demographer Susan Brower will share the podium with Marcia Avner, director of policy at the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits and longtime advocate for the census, to describe the process for the 2020 census and the current state of preparation. Based on their experiences and perspectives, the speakers will unpack some of the controversies surrounding the census and encourage questions and discussion.
