El Burrito heading west 

A group of investors have taken over the space and are bringing in the team behind El Burrito Mercado in St. Paul to open another outpost of their Mexican cuisine and takeout deli operation in the Chicago Avenue and 48th Street spot. Investors Ward Johnson and Eddie Landenberger, who live in the neighborhood, have stepped in and plan to renovate the Pepitos Restaurant space as well as Parkway Theater next door, which were both owned by Joe Minjares.

Northern Spark expands to two evenings this year 

Build No Borders: An environmentally responsive installation and ritual that invites community to reflect on climate change, environmental genocide and the urgency of including the voices of immigrant and POC communities. Since 2011, citywide festival Northern Spark has invited people to visit pop-up art parties that included giant group swings, live music, interactive light installations, yarn bombings, games, and letter writing.

The company's primary route runs through Nicollet, Le Sueur and Blue Earth Counties. After conducting research with potential customers, TRUE Transit found there were people on the west side of Nicollet County who wanted transportation to New Ulm.

Police Logs 

Ricky Allen Thompson, 55, of Nicollet driving a 2009 Volkswagne Routan, was facing the wrong way on Hwy 111 southbound shoulder to get his mail. Steven Richard Hackbarth, 53, of Silver Lake, was traveling northbound on Hwy 111 in a 1996 GMC Jimmy when the two vehicles collided.

MnDOT details Gateway construction schedule, detours

Construction work on 7th North including the bridge over the street and 7th North from Broadway to the Highway 14/15 intersection is set to begin in April and continue through October. A detour route follows Highway 14 to 20th Street South.

Highway 14 advocates submit requests for Corridors of Commerce funds 

With an eye toward continuing the expansion of U.S. Highway 14 to four lanes from New Ulm to Rochester, the U.S. Highway 14 Partnership officially submitted requests for funds from the state Corridors of Commerce program ahead of Monday's deadline for project submissions. "From the standpoint of economic development and safety, there is an extremely strong case for why Highway 14 deserves a share of the available Corridors of Commerce funds," "We are hopeful that MnDOT will agree and we can make progress on the final stretches that have yet to be expanded to four lanes."

Diet Cig, Spook School, and Great Grandpa are safe and seen at the Whole 

And nobody gave a shit. While the drunk and the frozen stood on Nicollet Mall listening to the Great Elders of Minnesota Rock and Roll the comfortably weird and awkwardly beautiful shuffled into the Whole Music Club to see four educated clowns from Glasgow-the Spook School-and two American indie bands fronted by women named Alex: Great Grandpa and Diet Cig.

Officers placed on leave following fatal shooting of Gaylord, Minn. man 

Three officers from the St. James Police Department who discharged their weapons during an officer involved shooting on Wednesday, Jan. 31, have been placed on administrative leave, according to a press release from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension . Gilberto Salas, 20, of Gaylord, Minn.

Highway 14 plans attract a lot of interest 

U.S. Highway 14 evening rush-hour traffic backed up at several intersections in Courtland, as dozens of people mulled over designs of a proposed four-lane expansion project at the Courtland Community Center Feb. 2. The project remains unfunded, but the Minnesota Department of Transportation is advancing the design and environmental processes to be prepared for potential program funding from entities including the Minnesota Legislature's Corridors of Commerce. Much of the four-lane highway project will follow the existing two-lane route.
