MPCA seeks to deny Minntac draft water permit variance 

A hearing will be held Jan. 23 on the state's proposed denial of U.S. Steel Minntac's application for a water quality permit variance at the corporation's 8,700-acre Mountain Iron tailings basin. The term of Minntac's current permit ended in 1992.

Prince's Music Vault in Danger from California Wild Fires 

Prince's music vault, which originally was at Paisley Park, then moved to California by court order, is in danger of being consumed by the fires burning in California. After Prince's death, a vault containing unreleased master copies of his music was found at Paisley Park.

This year's tax payment from Minnesota's iron ore industry is down 11 percent 

Minntac in Mountain Iron, Minn., is now back open but was idled in 2016, causing taxes paid in 2017 to be lower. Minnesota's iron mining industry paid $96.5 million in taxes to the state in 2017, down 11 percent from the prior year, mining officials said.

Judge considers wild rice protection: Some say sulfate rules could... 

Officials at the WLSSD say sewage treatment plants aren't designed to remove sulfate from effluent and that it could cost hundreds of millions of dollars to intall reverse osmosis treatment for sulfate. That could more than triple Duluth sewage bills, they note, and could force local mills out of business.
