Breast-feeding facing unwarranted cultural pressure | Opinion 

As an advocate, scholar, and, well, a human, I've been following recent stories on breast-feeding - national coverage of the U.S. delegation's appalling failure to support the World Health Assembly breast-feeding resolution and, more recently, news about the criticism of breast-feeding at a Mora, Minn., kiddie pool. While the two issues may appear to be only tangentially related, in fact they stem from the same cultural resistance that inhibits the achievement of national breast-feeding objectives and individual breast-feeding goals.

Local Families Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week 

It's World Breastfeeding Week, and despite the rain on Wednesday, dozens of families met at Soldier's Field Park in Rochester to celebrate. The wet weather may have canceled the walk for Rochester's annual breastfeeding celebration, but under the dry tents, another tradition was taking place.

Once upon a time, mothers breast-fed their children in public without no problem. Why? Simple.

Breast-feeding is under unwarranted cultural pressure 

Breast-feeding has been in the news, both globally, with a World Health Assembly resolution calling for support of the practice, and in Minnesota, where public breast-feeding at a pool in Mora created a stir. The U.S. balked at the health assembly resolution when it was taken up in Geneva in the spring, but a slightly modified version ultimately was approved.
