A year of building 

Saratoga Street in Marshall will be the focus of a major street and utility project in 2018, Marshall city staff said. The street will be reconstructed, and utility lines replaced, from the bridge north of College Drive down to Southview Drive.

Supporting firefighters 

The Ghent Fire Department received a $147,815 boost from a program that is administered by Federal Emergency Management Agency. In June, the Ghent Fire Department applied for $155,205 from the Assistance to Firefighters Federal Grant Program, City Administrator Dawn Vlaminck said.

Fire displaces Tracy family 

Kora Lindberg - less than a month away from having a baby - is counting her blessings despite losing her home and likely everything inside due to a fire on Sunday evening. Luckily, Lindberg, her boyfriend, Marshall Hippen, and their two children, 5-year-old Axel and 3-year-old Elsie, were able to escape the scene without injury.

Armed robbery reported in Marshall 

Officers from the Marshall Police Department responded to a reported armed robbery on Peltier Street at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. The complainant reported walking from his residence to his parked car when another male stood up from behind one of the parked vehicles, pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded money, according to Director of Public Safety Rob Yant.

Crime for Jan. 6 

A damage to property incident reported at 3:28 p.m. Thursday on the 600 block of West Main Street is under investigation, the Lyon County Sheriff's Department said. COTTONWOOD - A hit-and-run incident reported at 6:48 p.m. Thursday on the 800 block of North Barstad Road is under investigation, the Lyon County Sheriff's Department said.

One person killed in house fire in Marshall, MN 

Fire Chief Marc Klaith for the city of Marshall, MN said one person was killed on Christmas Day in a house fire. The Marshall Police Department has identified the victim as 49-year-old Kent Sikorski.

Reaching out with books 

Sometimes it's not convenient to travel to the nearest library, so Park Side Elementary students in Marshall came up with an innovative answer. They've spearheaded a service that brings box-sized neighborhood libraries to locations where they are likely to be used.

Fire in Marshall 

Marshall Fire Chief Marc Klaith said the house fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office and local law enforcement. The Marshall and Ghent fire departments, along with North Memorial Ambulance and local law enforcement, responded to the scene of the house fire, which was reported on the 600 block of Elaine Avenue around 1:35 p.m. Smoke from the fire could be seen from some distance away, and members of the Marshall Police Department and the Lyon County Sheriff's Department blocked off part of Elaine Avenue to control traffic on the street.
