Sheriff's Report 7-19-18 

A deputy responded to a report of a wrong-way driver on Highway 71 leaving Burger King in Jackson. The vehicle was gone when the deputy arrived in the area and is believed to have self-corrected.

Much-needed museum facility could t... 

The Jackson County Historical Society needs a new museum storage facility, and it will cost around $90,000 - to start. That's the word from society officials, who on Tuesday made their case for a new building to the Jackson County Board of Commissioners.

Sue Hedrick's 40th year with Lakefi... 

Sue Hedrick retired from her job at Lakefield Savings Bank 40 years to the day after she started. Hedrick's first day on the job was June 26, 1978.

SMBS TV transition going well 

Despite a few hiccups, the transition from Southwest Minnesota Broadband Service's current video service to its new Internet-protocol television option is going well. That's the word from Jackson City Council member Donnie Schoenrock, president of the board of directors of the multiple-municipality-owned communications utility, and Travis Thies, SMBS general manager.

July 4 corn pictures sought 

Readers are invited to submit a photo showing the height of Jackson County corn on the Fourth of July for a chance to appear in the Lakefield Standard. Submitted photos must be taken on July 4 and include at least one person standing next to the stalks.

Tired of the rain' 

Derrick Lusk looked out over his cornfield-turned-lake last Thursday, then turned and saw more of the same in what was once a pasture. His buddy, Brandon Hinkeldey, was braving the chilly water filling the field to unplug the culvert connecting the two tracts of ag land under a driveway so the gravel wouldn't wash out.

Sheriff's Report 6-28-18 

A deputy assisted a motorist at the Jackson County Fairgrounds. The deputy unlocked a vehicle so the person could retrieve needed medications.

Commissioners Call Emergency MEETINGFree Access 

Jackson County Commissioners will meet in special session Wednesday morning to consider approving a resolution declaring a state of emergency as related to recent flooding across the county. The meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Jackson County Courthouse in Jackson.

Some street signs selling, others g... 

Some old city street signs will be donated to the Jackson County Historical Society; others are currently for sale. Stacks of old street signs are piled high at Lakefield City Hall, available for purchase by members of the public for $25 apiece.

Local teens headed to Houston to wo... 

Local teens will be among the 30,000 or so gathered in Houston next week for the 2018 Evangelical Lutheran Church of America Youth Gathering. Lisa Schensted, youth pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lakefield, and Alyssa Herrig, youth pastor at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Jackson, say they are excited to take teens from their churches to the gathering, which runs June 27 through July 1. In the weeks and months leading up to the trip, the youth have been working hard to raise money to help defray costs.

As Ken and Brittany Brennan began to pursue their dream of adopting a child, they quickly realized it came with an incredibly high financial cost. They ended up finding a solution to their problem that not only benefits them, but others as well.
