Students match wits through chess 

The chess club was started at the school in 2006. Fast's son, a student there at the time, liked to play, so she began the club so he would have people to play with.

Immanuel gears up for big week 

Immanuel Lutheran School will celebrate National Lutheran Schools Week with several days of fun and festivity starting this Sunday. The week will initiate at Immanuel Lutheran Church's 9 a.m. service when students will sing songs at the morning worship.

Peek at new items highlights meetin... 

A review of past and pending projects, recent accomplishments and near-term objectives - as well as a peek at some of the fascinating historical items that have been donated over the course of the last year - is on tap for the annual meeting of the Jackson County Historical Society this weekend. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. this Saturday at the JCHS Museum in Lakefield.

School board passes on pay increase 

Members of the Jackson County Central Board of Education will take no pay increase in 2018. The decision to leave board member compensation at the level established back in 2015 was made during the board's reorganizational meeting Monday evening.

Council members committed to keepin... 

Members of the Lakefield City Council are committed to doing everything in their power to keep the Jackson County Historical Society Museum in Lakefield - even if that means helping to solve the problems with its Highway 86 building. Council member Brent Pavelko last week said he has learned from conversations with society director Mike Kirchmeier of several concerns with the current museum location and the longevity of the building.

Local law enforcement agencies dodg... 

Local law enforcement agencies appear to have a dodged a bullet - namely, being caught up in an alleged squad-car overcharge scam that is sending shockwaves across the state. Last year, owners of Fergus Falls-based Nelson Auto Center discovered the dealership, which had a contract with the state to supply vehicles for all law enforcement agencies, overcharged agencies across Minnesota by as much as $700,000 over the past five years.

Come Sunday evening, the longtime society news columnist for the Lakefield Standard will not flip through pages of notes she's collected over the course of the last week, will not wait by the phone, will not place a few last-minute calls herself and will not check the upcoming events list at the senior citizen center for a nugget or two of interest.
