2 Iron Range stores with same owner sell big Powerball payouts in same drawing 

Two stores on the Iron Range with the same owner each sold tickets worth $250,000 for a Powerball drawing last week, lottery officials announced. The winning tickets were sold at Short Stop convenience stores about 70 miles apart at 1815 E. Sheridan St. in Ely and at 1121 E. Howard St. in Hibbing.

Group of 22 Minnesota courthouse workers win big in Powerball lottery 

There was a lot of screaming on the St. Louis County Courthouse campus in Hibbing on Thursday morning, Jan. 11. A group of 22 that work either in the courthouse or the nearby county annex were learning that they just won the lottery. The ticket holders matched four of the five numbers and the Powerball, which is normally worth $50,000.

Small economic development projects follow recovery of Iron Range taconite industry 

The Iron Range wrapped up 2017 with a flurry of demolition, building and job training projects designed to end blight and sprinkle economic development across communities in the Northeast pocket of Minnesota, state officials announced Friday. The projects are the latest good news for the Iron Range, which is recovering from a two-year downturn in the iron ore and taconite pellet industry that dominates that part of the state.

2017 may be worst in years for Minnesota fire deaths 

Fifty-seven people died this year because of fires in Minnesota as of Dec. 15. That doesn't include five deaths in recent days from fires in Hibbing, Lakeville and Marshall which seem likely to be added once the investigations are complete. "We could easily be in the sixties and we haven't seen that number since 2002," said Minnesota State Fire Marshall Bruce West.
