More townships, cities mull merits ... 

More Jackson County townships - and even some cities - are poised to replace Election Day voting with mail-in balloting. Jackson County Auditor/Treasurer Kevin Nordquist said Belmont and Rost townships, along with the city of Alpha, will join Heron Lake Township in conducting mail-in balloting next November.

Two days, two rollovers, two injuri... 

Two people were injured in two separate single-vehicle rollovers on consecutive days at nearly the same location in Jackson County. A Heron Lake man was hurt in a one-vehicle rollover at the intersection of Highways 60 and 86 last Thursday evening, one day after a Colo, Iowa, man sustained injuries in a single-vehicle rollover just west of that same intersection.

Meteorological tower could be precu... 

A meteorological tower will rise in rural Petersburg, a possible precursor to a new crop of wind turbines. Jackson County Commissioners last week approved granting a conditional use permit allowing the construction of a meteorological tower on property owned by the Harold A. and Frances Skow Living Trust in Petersburg Township.

After-school adventures fire up nex... 

For local students, the adventure begins when the school day ends, thanks to the Jackson County 4-H After-school Adventures program. The adventure series begins Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Riverside Elementary School in Jackson; Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Pleasantview Elementary School in Lakefield; and Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Heron Lake-Okabena Elementary School in Heron Lake.
