The Minnesota Senate has signed off on raises for the state's 30,000 public employees and voted to plug a budget shortfall in state pension plans. Underfunded pensions and state employee contracts have been controversial at the Capitol for years.

Elk population in NW Minnesota shows slight increase 

The Department of Natural Resources said Monday the population is estimated at 97, compared with 79 last winter and 83 in 2016.

80-year-old Grygla man dies in farm accident Thursday, August 31 

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office was called around 10:10 a.m. Tuesday to a farmstead in the Northwood Township. The sheriff's office says Ralph Lee was readying or cleaning the box of a farm truck when he became entrapped in a grain chute.

Elk population of NW Minnesota estimated at 79 in 3 herds 

While that's down from 83 last winter and 131 in 2015, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says the main reason is that the Caribou-Vita herd travels back and forth across the Minnesota-Manitoba border. Most of that herd was on the Canadian side when the aerial survey was conducted.
