Plaintiff prevails in 'date rape' civil suit 

When the Itasca County Attorney's Office declined to prosecute Randall Lee Vannet of Grand Rapids for allegedly raping his girlfriend, Renee Dianne "Rae" Florek, she didn't give up. Florek had dated Vannet for more than four years.

Magnetation startup could come this summer 

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn.-The long-awaited restart of the former Magnetation operations just outside Grand Rapids could happen as soon as the summer, with more than 100 people back to work, months earlier than previously expected. New owner Tom Clarke said this week that he now has engineering plans ready and financing in place to complete an estimated $20 million in retrofitting work to the former Magnetation pellet plant in Reynolds, Indiana.

Grand Rapids isn't the only city to have lost its namesake rapids 

The Grand River today bears few signs of the rushing, roaring rapids that greeted Grand Rapids' first white settlers in the 1820s. A nonprofit is trying to bring the rapids back to the Grand; a $44.67 million effort that has taken years to coordinate and has yet to start.

Small economic development projects follow recovery of Iron Range taconite industry 

The Iron Range wrapped up 2017 with a flurry of demolition, building and job training projects designed to end blight and sprinkle economic development across communities in the Northeast pocket of Minnesota, state officials announced Friday. The projects are the latest good news for the Iron Range, which is recovering from a two-year downturn in the iron ore and taconite pellet industry that dominates that part of the state.

Grand Rapids serves as ground zero for Enbridge Line 3 

A billboard on Highway 2 just west of Grand Rapids sponsored by Honor the Earth is critical of Enbridge Line 3 project. Bob King / Forum News Service Pastor Megan Crouch of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids thinks that Enbridge should remove old pipe rather than leave it in the ground if the Line 3 project is approved.

Spectro Alloys expanding in Rosemount 

Aluminum recycler Spectro Alloys is expanding and adding two metal processing furnaces that should help the business take on new orders and hold its own with aggressive competitors, company and state officials announced Wednesday. Spectro, which will receive some assistance from the state, is adding about 5,000 additional square feet onto its Rosemount facility.

Iron Range Brewery Update: Klockow open, BoomTown coming soon, Rapids delayed 

The craft beer craze is finally permeating Minnesota's Iron Range. Before the year's end, the area will support two new breweries: Klockow Brewing Company in Grand Rapids and BoomTown Brewery & Woodfire Grill in Hibbing.
