Lights will be judged tonight 

There will be a cribbage tournament beginning with registration at 1:15 p.m. today and play to follow at the Welcome Legion. Anyone interested in playing cribbage is welcome.

Crawford ready to retire 

For 26 years, Bill Crawford has been involved in the Martin County and Fairmont communities. He has served as the Martin County Extension agent, an ag representative on the Fairmont Economic Development Authority and is widely known for grilling pork loins or pork patties for the Martin County Pork Producers.

Family, colleagues remember Nelson 

They say it's hard to forget someone who gave you so much to remember and that is true of Sue Nelson, who was a mother, sister, daughter, colleague and friend to so many. Sue was born in Fairmont to Robert and Evelyn Kay Kloeckner.

Tax break now will benefit area over time 

Local government entities - Fairmont Area Schools, the city of Fairmont and Martin County - have been or are considering a tax break for a Fairmont business, Great Plains Transportation. We believe they are doing the right thing to help spur business activity and jobs.

Fairmont man faces felony assault count 

Brian Michael Finke, 42, has been charged with assault in the third degree, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. On Nov. 24, a Martin County Sheriff's deputy investigated a reported assault that occurred in the Martin County Jail.

School OKs tax break request 

The local business is asking not to pay new property taxes resulting from a proposed expansion. It is a 10-year request.

The Community Center Action Committee invited the public to the Opera House this week to talk about a possible community center in Fairmont. The presentation was informative and the discussion that followed was good.

Diligent - Monte' leaving long-time post 

Monte Rohman, Truman's long-time city clerk, is just finishing up his 36th year. He will retire at the end of this year after a satisfying career.

The informational town hall meeting on the proposed community center in Fairmont, recorded Wednesday night at the Opera House, will be broadcast on local cable channel 13. The video will air at 2, 6 and 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Vanska made the announcement at the orchestra board's annual meeting Wednesday.

Public weighs in on rec center 

People filled the majority of the Opera House's main floor, with some expressing strong opposition and others voicing staunch support for the community center. Steve Hawkins, Brandon Edmundson and Mike Edman, members of the Community Center Action Committee, recapped the project's history and the work invested over the past two years.

Project Trust helps students help others 

Students from Fairmont and Blue Earth high schools received special training Wednesday from Illusion Theater, a theater company based in Minneapolis. Illusion Theater is professional theater that puts on regular shows.
