Woman facing charges 

Pamela Elaine Carter, 24, has been charged with two counts of selling drugs in the fifth degree and one count of drug possession in the fifth degree. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

City adopts rules update 

The Fairmont City Council adopted a new stormwater ordinance on Monday, accommodating changes required by federal and state environmental regulators. The public hearing drew no citizen comments on the new regulations, which provide the first city updates on stormwater rules since 2010.

Minnesota Valley Action Council recently renewed an agreement with Martin County to fund an annual summer youth internship administrative program. The program provides summer work experience for youth living in Martin County.

Chen stays focused on recovery 

Kevin Chen, an 18-year-old from Fairmont, has spent the last six months at home recovering after being hit by a car last September. Chen had just started his freshman year at Minnesota State-Mankato when he was struck in a hit-and-run accident in Mankato.

Man faces felony drug counts 

Shawn Phillip Gaston has been charged with one count of drug possession in the third degree, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He has also been charged with two counts of drug possession in the fifth degree, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Old 16' repairs coming this year 

The road is set to receive a bituminous overlay and added bituminous shoulders later this year, starting from Highway 15 in Fairmont and running east to the Faribault County line. County Engineer Kevin Peyman had previously submitted an application for state aid via a Local Road Improvement Program, and it awarded Martin County $1 million for the project.

Locals to testify on vocational bill 

There will be two legislative committee hearings at the state Capitol on Thursday regarding a bill that would provide state aid for students taking vocational classes outside of the regularly scheduled school day. Fairmont Area Superintendent Joe Brown, vocational Principal Andy Traetow and vocational teacher Bob Bonin plan to testify.

Granada man facing felony 

Jordan Dwayne Mortenson, 23, has been charged with making threats of violence, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. On Feb. 26, Martin County Sheriff's deputies responded to a residence in Granada on a report of a domestic assault in progress.

Teachers hold down after-school jobs to stay afloat 

She does this in the evenings and nights after school, where she works during the day for her full-time job. "I'm there after school from 5:30 to 11 Tuesdays and Thursdays, sometimes on Mondays," Abu-Ghannam, a teacher at West Fairmont Middle School, said.
