Deal paying dividends for city, school 

A collaborative effort between the city of Fairmont and Fairmont Area Schools has resulted in the creation of Whitetail Ridge, a housing development with 20 residential lots south of the soccer fields in Fairmont. For each lot sold, the school district gets $10,000, which it will put toward vocational programs at the high school.

Freedom 5K won't be held 

For five years, the Freedom 5K was held on July 4 in Fairmont to raise money for Martin County Beyond the Yellow Ribbon and its support of active duty military families, but the event will not be held this year. Tam Plumhoff, coordinator of MCBTYR, organized the first two Freedom 5Ks, which drew 100 and 200 entrants, respectively.

Woman faces drug count 

Lindsey Sunshine Bontjes, 36, has been charged with drug possession in the fifth degree, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. On May 21, a Truman police officer was dispatched to the Casey's convenience store in Truman in reference to a welfare check.

GHEC OKs co-op move 

The Granada-Huntley-East Chain School Board on Thursday unanimously approved a plan to relocate the Southern Plains Education Cooperative from Winnebago to the former Lincoln School building in Fairmont. The cooperative is a joint powers organization that provides special education and alternative learning programs for: Blue Earth Area, Fairmont Area, Granada-Huntley-East Chain, Martin County West, United South Central and Truman.

Alpha man charged with theft 

Marcus David Ballou has been charged with one count each of theft and financial transaction card fraud. Both charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Teen facing felony theft charge 

On May 29, a Fairmont police officer was driving west on Blue Earth Avenue when the officer observed a vehicle that appeared to be a Chevrolet S-10 pickup driving north on Prairie Avenue. Officers had previously been advised that a Chevrolet S-10 had been reported stolen out of Emmet County, Iowa.

Playground gets $150K from city 

Adventure Playground moved a giant step closer to reality Monday when the Fairmont City Council upheld its original pledge to include $150,000 in the 2019 budget, matching the amount in this year's budget, to help finance construction of the accessible play area in Gomsrud Park. Prior to the council vote, Shelly Krahmer, representing the playground's task force, told the council the group has raised $171,000 through grants and donations from individuals, businesses and service clubs.

Adventure Playground moves forward 

One year ago, members of the Adventure Playground task force made its initial public pitch to the Fairmont Park Board, championing its goal of a playground accessible to all children regardless of their physical abilities. Formed in early 2017, the task force spent a few months researching the feasibility of an accessible playground before jumping into ambitious fundraising for the $500,000 project, hoping for construction in 2019.

Huts help keep dogs happy, fit 

Girl Scout Alexis Hinz, 13, is pictured with a dog on top of a obstacle dog hut at the Martin County Humane Society in Fairmont. Hinz created the huts for the Humane Society for her Silver Award project.

Big sister gives back to help others 

Jenna Spencer is raising money to donate to two entities that helped her family when her little brother, Charlie, was hospitalized. Charlie Spencer adores his big sister, Jenna, and the feeling is mutual.

Groups help take on hunger 

This is the second year that a group of people from different organizations have rallied together to provide free meals in the Fairmont area to those in need during the summer months. The initial meeting last year took place because there was concern about how students receiving free and reduced lunches during the school year would be fed during the summer.

Scout finds gold in children's play 

Children are seen sitting in a circle on stage during a read-through of the script for the play "The Fairy Tale Network," which will be performed at 7 p.m. tonight at the Fairmont Opera House. The cast is comprised of children leaving grades K-2, and it has all been organized by 15-year-old Izzy Munsch for her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn.
