City weighs rec center costs 

Fairmont City Council was inundated Monday with information on building and operating costs for a proposed $24.7 million community center and its impact on the city's budget. Earlier this year, the council approved spending $125,000 to get the community center project started.

ATM taken from First Bank BE 

The ATM in the lobby at the First Bank Blue Earth was stolen on Friday, Sept. 7, and Blue Earth Police Chief Tom Fletcher says there are no leads in the case after more than a week since the crime happened.

Groups win $81K in grants 

A Schmeeckle Foundation reception was held Wednesday at the Fairmont Opera House, honoring fourth-round grant recipients Pheasants Forever, Fairmont Opera House and Habitat for Humanity. The private family foundation serves Martin County and carries on the legacy of long-time county resident Juanita Ellen Schmeeckle.

ECFE open house set for Sept. 27 

The Prairie Star Quilt Guild will host a Fiber Arts Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Fairmont Evangelical Covenant Church, 901 Woodland Ave., in Fairmont. There will be 14 demonstrations presented throughout the day.

Man facing felony charge 

Larry Annis Drayfahl III, 32, has been charged with drug possession in the fifth degree, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. On Aug. 25, a Fairmont police officer was on patrol when he observed a van pull into Kwik Trip.

Man charged with sex crime 

Luke Sigor Thompson, 38, has been charged with criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. On Aug. 29, a Fairmont police detective was dispatched in response to a sexual assault report by medical personnel.

Cider Fest' set for Saturday 

Timberlake Orchard, located at 176 200th Ave. in rural Fairmont, will host its first Cider Fest on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Timberlake has been open since 1989. It is currently owed by Al and Josh Zeitz and Brian Kudlo, who purchased it from the previous owners about four seasons ago.

2018 South Dakota Senior Games held in Sioux Falls 

The event attracts athletes 50 years and older from across the state along with Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and even Canada. "I've known people who started in their 70's and get very competitive and have fun.

Schools' results mixed 

The state Department of Education recently released its Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments. While there was little improvement statewide in math and reading, several area schools have seen progress.
