County jail burdened by meth crimes 

County Attorney Terry Viesselman addressed Martin County commissioners Tuesday, saying there is a problem concerning jail space that is only going to continue. Viesselman shared how policy decisions made by the Minnesota Department of Corrections affect the county's already overburdened jail system.

We express shock, sadness, outrage and a whole gamut of emotions, and then push the incidents to the back of our minds - until the next time. Local law enforcement offers an instructional program to help prepare and educate people on how best to react if placed in this situation.

Daniel J. Lotzgesell, 38, of Fairmont was convicted of driving while impaired-alcohol concentration 0.08 within two hours; fined $610, sentenced to jail 90 days, stayed 90 days for one year, one year unsupervised probation, complete chemical assessment, follow recommendations of evaluation, no alcohol/controlled substance use, no alcohol/controlled substance possession, random testing at the request of agent or a licensed peace officer, attend MADD impact panel, no same or similar. Additional charges of fourth-degree driving while impaired, driving under the influence of alcohol, and driving without a valid for vehicle class or type, were all dismissed.

Fundraiser set for the weekend 

The first official fundraising event for an accessible playground in Fairmont will be staged Friday and Saturday at the Fairmont Eagles Club. a mystery dinner theater show, is being sponsored by the Adventure Playground Task Force and the local MOSS group.

Police acquire 10 defibrillators 

Sgt. Chad Sanow of the Fairmont Police Department is happy to report that the department recently received a grant from the Martin County Area Foundation for 10 automated external defibrillators. Ordered from Lifeline Inc. in Savage, the AEDs all boast several features that will aid in saving lives.

Fairmont witnesses investment 

Fairmont, like almost every other community in the country, has an aging population, courtesy of the massive number of Baby Boomers hitting retirement age, but this has not meant there is no growth in the city. Linsey Preuss, Fairmont economic development director, is quick to list the projects that brought millions of dollars of investment to the city.

State Rep. Bob Gunther, R-Fairmont, was recently appointed to a housing task force created by Gov. Mark Dayton. The group wants to examine rising housing costs and possible solutions, especially in outstate Minnesota.

Development group drafts strategic plan 

The Fairmont Economic Development Authority has approved a three-year strategic plan describing its overall mission and its focus on six areas of economic development. "We're going to use it mostly for grant-writing purposes because there's grants available for all the different activities we do," "What the strategic plan says is, 'This community has talked about it, and this is a priority.'

Holiday DWI sweeps in Minn. net nearly 2,700 

FAIRMONT, Minn.-One woman was arrested in Fairmont in far southern Minnesota on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol on Christmas Eve - then again on New Year's Eve. Nearby, a man was arrested on suspicion of a DWI on his way to the St. James Police Department to pick up his friend, who had been arrested two hours earlier for the same thing.
