Four Minnesota State two-year colleges get new leaders 

This week, the board of trustees approved the appointments of Carrie Brimhall as president of Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Craig Johnson as president of Ridgewater College, and Michael Berndt as interim president of two schools, Dakota County Technical College and Inver Hills Community College. Brimhall has been vice president of academic affairs at Minnesota State Community and Technical College since 2014.

Detroit Lakes, Minn. couple among those stranded in Mexico by Sun Country

Gov. Mark Dayton proposes millions in funding to help with Special Ed costs 

Thursday Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius emphasized the urgent need for this funding, noting that more than 140,000 children and youth currently receive special education services throughout the state. "Our Minnesota school districts have had to find ways to cover the unfunded costs of special education for decades, and it places a huge burden on their already stressed budgets... Our school districts tell us this is a priority, and we are listening to them," said Cassellius.

Busy road construction season ahead for MnDOT 

It's hard to believe with all of the snow still on the ground, but road construction season is coming up fast and the Minnesota Department of Transportation has a long list of projects for this year. Projects in our area include installing a traffic light on Highway 10 and County Road 7 in Lake Park, resurfacing Highway 59 from Detroit Lakes to the Becker County line, and replacing the Kennedy bridge deck on Highway 2 in Grand Forks.

Easter Weekend Off to Wintry Start in Minnesota 

Snow was already falling Friday morning in portions of the state, and the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for portions of central, north central, northwest and west central Minnesota from 7 p.m. Friday through 10 a.m. Saturday. One round of light snow will push through this morning, but a heavier round will develop tonight across portions of central MN and northern WI.

Many people are mistaken in thinking that water and electric service can be turned off and on simply by flipping a switch somewhere at City Hall, but the capability of remotely controlling utility service in Fairmont is on the horizon. On Tuesday, the Fairmont Public Utilities Commission heard a presentation from Tom Thorson, territory sales director for Eaton, an energy automation firm headquartered in Cleveland and with an office in Detroit Lakes.

Lake Park-Audubon High School fire suspects identified 

Three juveniles have been identified as suspects in fires set Saturday at the former Lake Park-Audubon High School here, the Lake Park Police Department announced Monday, March 26. A citizen tip led police to a 13-year-old boy from Audubon and two 14-year-old boys from Lake Park, who admitted to lighting fires in the gymnasium and to prior break-ins and vandalism at the building, police reported. Reports in the case have been forwarded to the Becker County Attorney's Office for consideration of charges.
