Vogel files for 5th District seat 

Lifelong Brown County resident Jack Vogel of rural Comfrey created a four-way race for the Brown County Board of Commissioners District 5 seat when he filed for office June 5. Vogel will face Lynn Anderson and Derek Tonn of Springfield plus Jeffrey Veerkamp of Comfrey for the county board seat held by Dennis Potter of rural Springfield. Potter announced in May that he will not file for office again after several terms in office.

Sheriff Hoffmann withdraws, supports Seidl's campaign 

With a flurry of activity at the end of the filing period, the Brown County sheriff's race became a four-way battle. Sheriff's office candidates on the Aug. 14 primary ballot are Seidl, deputies Matt Ibberson and Jason Fairbairn and New Ulm Police Department Senior Investigator Jeff Hohensee.

Last day to file for office 

Today is the last day to file for anyone interested in being on the general election ballot for Nov. 6. Cobden, Comfrey, Hanska and New Ulm will each hold an election for mayor, but according to the Secretary of State website only two candidates have filed for the New Ulm Mayor position. Incumbent Robert Beussman and Kathleen Backer are in the mayoral race.

911 service goes out, is restored 

The outage did not affect Comfrey, the release stated. 911 land line service was restored in New Ulm, Hanska and Sleepy Eye, according to a BCSO news release sent at 1:27 p.m. Area 911 land line service as completely restored, according to a news release sent at 1:38 p.m. Brown County used an IPAWS notice to alert area residents of the outage and when service was restored, BCSO Chief Deputy Jason Seidl said.

Open 5th District seat draws three contenders 

The Brown County Board of Commissioners District 5 seat became a three-way race this week when Lynn Anderson and Derek Tonn of Springfield and Jeffrey Veerkamp of Comfrey filed for election May 25. The men responded after District 5 incumbent Dennis Potter of Springfield recently announced he will not seek re-election, opting to spend more time with family after more than a decade of county board service. A fifth-generation Brown County resident, Anderson, 52, has spent his entire life as a farmer, welder and small business owner.

New Ulm American Legion Riders to hold 4th annual Pork Chop 130 Ride 

Motorcycles, trikes, cars and trucks are welcome for the ride. The cost is $20 per person and includes a Legion broasted pork chop dinner at 6 p.m. after the ride at American Legion Post 132, 13 S. Minnesota St. Registration is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. A pre-ride muster and briefing will be held at 12:20 p.m., and the ride leaves at 12:30 p.m. The 130-miled ride has stops in Lake Crystal, Lewisville, Comfrey, Springfield and back to the New Ulm Legion Post.
