One dies in Beltrami County crash 

A one-vehicle crash on a snowy and icy highway in north central Minnesota Monday claimed the life of a woman from Solway, Minn., the State Patrol said. Claudia Leiby, 51, was the lone occupant of a 2002 Ford pickup that spun out about 10:40 a.m. on Hwy.

Bemidji Police urge drivers to use caution when driving in the area 

There are numerous reports of black ice and poor road conditions throughout the area, most notably is the stretch of U.S. Hwy 2 between Wilton and Division Street on the west side of Bemidji. Since 7:00 Monday morning, about 30 vehicles had slid into the ditch.

Bemidji man charged with arson 

BEMIDJI, Minn.-A Bemidji man accused of intentionally setting fire to a house was charged with first-degree arson Thursday, Jan. 4. Damian Patrick Joseph Smith, 20, has been held in the Beltrami County Jail since his arrest early Tuesday, Jan. 2. He was taken into custody after Beltrami County deputies found him acting suspicious at the scene of the fire. According to a criminal complaint against Smith, deputies and Bemidji firefighters received a report of the fire at the 700 block of Sunset Way at about 10:22 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1. When they arrived, officials found both of the home's residents, as well as Smith, in the garage.

House fire near Bemidji lands man in jail on attempted-murder allegations 

A 20-year-old northern Minnesota man is jailed on suspicion of setting an occupied house on fire near Bemidji, authorities said. The blaze broke out about 8:20 p.m. Monday at the home in the 700 block of Sunset Way in Northern Township, a community that borders Bemidji on the north, the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office said.

Minnesota state parks to offer 'First Day Hikes' on New Year's Day 

Naturalists at several Minnesota state parks are ready to help hikers and snowshoers start off the new year on a good foot - if the weather doesn't put their plans on ice. About a dozen state parks are slated to offer "First Day Hikes" on Jan. 1 as part of a nationwide effort to get people outside, the state Department of Natural Resources has announced.
