Minnesota briefs: It's maple syrup season in state parks

Man charged in fatal Alexandria stabbing pleads guilty to lesser charge 

ALEXANDRIA, Minn.-A 30-year-old Alexandria man accused in a 2013 fatal stabbing pleaded guilty to count one of manslaughter Monday, Feb. 26. Kody Lee Klimek was charged last September with two second-degree murder counts - intentional and unintentional - and a third-degree murder charge in connection with the stabbing death of Phillip Altstadt, 28, on June 1, 2013, outside an apartment complex in Alexandria. In May 2014, Klimek faced the same charges, but they were dismissed because two key witnesses could not be located.

Abduction suspect seeks to suppress evidence 

Steven Powers, 20, appeared in court on Thursday, Feb. 15. He faces charges of kidnapping, criminal sexual conduct and false imprisonment. Powers' attorney requested another hearing, during which they plan to file motions to suppress evidence, according to Douglas County attorney Chad Larson.

J.C. Penney store to close in Alexandria, joining 8 others in Minn. last year 

ALEXANDRIA, Minn.-One of the anchors of Viking Plaza Mall in Alexandria will soon be empty, as J.C. Penney will be closing its doors May 12. On-duty manager Karen Brazel confirmed that the Alexandria store is among the J.C. Penney stores that are closing. The store will begin liquidating its merchandise March 5. Last year, the retailer closed eight locations in Minnesota, including Baxter, Fairmont, Faribault, Hibbing, Hutchinson, Red Wing, Thief River Falls and Winona.
