As temperatures plummet, expect icy roads and sidewalks 

Snow has yet to fall in the metro area, but the temperature has. In turn, that has created an icy mess on side streets and sidewalks as moisture from overnight drizzle begins to hit the pavement.

Owatonna man pleads guilty in Freeborn County 

Police pulled over 28-year-old Christopher Lynn Wright in Albert Lea on November 10, 2017 for suspicious license plates. An officer says he detected the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle and a search turned up two hand guns, a black machete, more than 60 grams of marijuana, almost two grams of methamphetamine, and about $1,000 in cash.

Minnesota Senate Bonding Committee Hears Out Albert Lea's 'Wishlist' 

Six weeks until the 2018 Minnesota legislature convenes, and one of the centerpieces of the next session will be "bonding". "We have to make some decisions about what's in and what's out," said Republican State Senator Dave Senjem of Rochester.

Men accused in Freeborn County kidnapping to stand trial 

Authorities say 40-year-old Kenneth Bruce Nelson of Faribault and 30-year-old Cody Lee Hanson of Albert Lea abducted a man on July 17, 2017. The man says he was sleeping in his vehicle inside a large shed when he was woken up by someone beating on the dashboard.

Mayo streamlines tax reporting - and critics pounce 

Mayo Clinic recently completed a five-year overhaul of its tax reporting process that streamlined its IRS paperwork and, critics contend, reduced its financial transparency. It is the culmination of a process that began in 2011, when Mayo Clinic first merged its tax returns with Mayo's other primary campuses in Florida and Arizona to create what's called a group return.

MCHS Albert Lea Inpatient Surgery Move Delayed 

Mayo Clinic Health Systems is pushing back the date to move inpatient surgery services as part of its consolidation of the Albert Lea and Austin campuses. The original timeline called for inpatient surgery to move on January 1, 2018.

Mayo starts $5 million upgrades in Albert Lea 

Mayo Clinic has started a $2.75 million project to install a state-of-the-art cooling plant at its Albert Lea facility. While the upgrades actually began last fall, Mayo announced the start of the project Tuesday while the campus is already facing a whirlwind of changes and public criticism.

Blue Earth weighing sales tax 

According to City Administrator Tim Ibisch, the sales tax would generate $165,000 annually, based on last year's sales figures. Ibisch said the 0.5 percent sales tax is not uncommon for cities in the area.

Albert Lea Girl's Death Prompts Driver Education Campaign 

"What I would like is for no parent have this be the reason they lose their child," Kelly Wassenberg said. "18 months ago, a little girl in our community, Sophie Stultz, was riding her bicycle when she was hit by a motorist and she was killed in that crash," Freeborn County Sheriff Kurt Freitag explained.

New antiques store open for business near Wells

American Red Cross helps family in Albert Lea after house fire 

Fire crews responded to the 600 block of Hope Lane after receiving a call of an attic fire just before 8:15 a.m. on Saturday. When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming out of the roof and confirmed it was an attic fire.

Family of 4 Impacted by Fire in Albert Lea 

In Albert Lea, American Red Cross volunteers are helping a family of four who was impacted by a house fire Saturday morning. Firefighters said the fire started around 8:15 Saturday morning at a residence on the 600 block of Hope Lane.

SMART changes coming in 2018 

The existing preschool service in Albert Lea, Austin, and Owatonna will be expanded starting January 2 for more ride availability for families that were previously on waiting lists. As of January 29, SMART service in Blooming Prairie will be available from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, one less hour than before.
