Local Farmer Announces Bid to Unseat Rep. Peggy Bennett 

DFL candidate, Terry Gjersvik has announced a bid for the Minnesota House of Representatives District 27A, which is currently held by Republican Peggy Bennett. District 27A includes Freeborn County as well as portions of Dodge and Faribault Counties.

Local Veterans Rally at the Capitol 

As part of the annual "Veteran's Day on the Hill", military members met with lawmakers to rally behind key bills. Dozens of the veterans were from southeastern Minnesota.

Edina's Sammy Walker wins Mr. Hockey Award 

Greenway's Grant Clafton and Jeremiah Johnson of St. Michael Albertville received the John Mariucci Award, given to the Class A and Class AA high school coaches of the year. Albert Lea's Roy Nystrom received the Cliff Thompson Award, presented to the "Old Timer Coach" of the year.

One Year After Tornado, New Clarks Grove Fire Station Plans Unveiled 

Just over a year ago, an EF-1 tornado ripped through the tiny Freeborn County town of Clarks Grove, damaging much of the city's downtown, including the fire station. While much of the damage has been repaired, the fire station remains empty, but plans are underway to replace the building with a new station that's nearly twice the size.

Albert Lea City Officials Throw Support Behind Rural Health Care Bill 

In 2017 Mayo Clinic decided to consolidate some medical services from their Albert Lea Health Systems location to their Austin campus. Albert Lea Rep. Peggy Bennett, R-Albert Lea, introduced a new bill that would encourage health care providers to move into rural areas in Minnesota.

Thieves break into fitness center lockers, steal belongings 

Rochester police have one man in custody after he and a two others allegedly cut the locks off the lockers at a fitness center, stole the belongings inside, and then went on a shopping spree Tuesday night. Police responded to Edge Fitness, 1201 S. Broadway Ave., around 6 p.m., where they talked to two victims - a 26-year-old Albert Lea man and a 25-year-old Rochester man - who told them the locks on their lockers had been cut and the contents stolen, according to Rochester Police Capt.

Locals to testify on vocational bill 

There will be two legislative committee hearings at the state Capitol on Thursday regarding a bill that would provide state aid for students taking vocational classes outside of the regularly scheduled school day. Fairmont Area Superintendent Joe Brown, vocational Principal Andy Traetow and vocational teacher Bob Bonin plan to testify.

Man falls 70 feet in grain bin 

A 60-year-old Alden man is in the hospital after falling 70 feet to the bottom of a grain bin on Friday. Around 9:35 a.m., the Freeborn County Sheriff's Office responded to the Northern County Co-Op, at 66875 180th St., according to a news release from Sheriff Kurt Freitag.

MN: City Looking Into Coordinated Transit to and From Austin 

Feb. 28--The city of Albert Lea is evaluating the possibility of a coordinated transit approach with Austin and Freeborn and Mower counties to ensure needed rides are available for residents. Albert Lea City Manager Chad Adams said the plan was initially discussed immediately following Mayo Clinic Health System's announcement in June it would transition most inpatient services from Albert Lea to Austin, based on the likelihood that some residents who needed to be taken to the hospital did not have transportation.

Minivan flies through the air in southern Freeborn County

W'bago officer under scrutiny 

On Dec. 8, Ryg walked into a business in Albert Lea to find out why his girlfriend had been fired and obtain a copy of her personal file. When told by an employee that Ryg could not be given the information, Ryg said he was going to file a lawsuit, stating, Ryg then left the store, according to the complaint, and sat in his truck with his girlfriend for about five minutes before returning to the store to again request a copy of his girlfriend's personal records.
