Aitkin Lions to replace benches at courthouse 

A brief hour-long regular meeting of the Aitkin County Board of Commissioners took place Oct. 10. The consent agenda was approved, followed by committee updates and a closed meeting for the performance evaluation of County Administrator Jessica Seibert. The benches in front of the courthouse will be replaced by the Aitkin Lions Club at no cost to the city.

Lions and Tigers and Bears! Oh my 

Yes, you heard that right! There will also be Hens, Roosters, Elephants, Kangaroos, Fish, and even an appearance by some Snakes when the Great River Strings orchestras present a veritable Symphonic Safari on November 11 and 12 in Deerwood and Aitkin. The Ripple River Strings will start things off, taking the audience deep into the jungles of Africa.

Lueck calls for pipeline replacement project to advance 

Rep. Dale Lueck, R-Aitkin, cited numerous safety concerns continued delays to the replacement of the Enbridge Line 3 pipeline could cause as he testified in support of the project during an administrative law hearing Wednesday. In testimony at the East Lake Community Center near McGregor before Administrative Law Judge Ann O'Reilly, Lueck summarized concerns also outlined in a letter he sent Tuesday to Scott Ek of the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission.

More Early Learning Scholarships available 

During the 2017 legislative session, Rep. Rob Ecklund, DFL-International Falls, successfully fought for additional investments for early childhood education. Now, the Northland Foundation is accepting applicants for scholarships to help local families pay for quality early childhood education.

Lueck encourages early learning scholarship applications 

Area families may qualify to receive a portion of the historic $20.7 million in early learning scholarship funding the Legislature provided in an education finance package enacted earlier this year, according to a news release from Rep. Dale Lueck, R-Aitkin. Families with children ages 3 to 5 may be eligible to receive scholarships up to $7,500 per child, per year, to help pay for high-quality child care and early education to help them prepare for school.

Klobuchar staff to host opioid meetings in Brainerd, Aitkin 

Representatives with the office of U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar will meet with first responders, advocates and elected officials for a series of public forums in northern Minnesota. During the discussions Klobuchar's staff will provide updates on her work to support local efforts to combat the opioid epidemic and hear firsthand from northland leaders about resources needed to continue effectively responding at the local level, according to a news release from Klobuchar's office.

Expected heavy rain brings flood watch 

The lakes area is in a line of Minnesota counties in a flash flood watch, which stretches north to the state's Arrowhead region. The flash flood watch is in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, for Crow Wing, Aitkin, Morrison and Mille Lacs counties in the region.

Tornado Warning Expires in Central Minnesota, T-Storm Warning Remains to the North 

The National Weather Service has allowed a tornado warning to expire for portions of southeastern Pope and west-central Stearns counties in central Minnesota. The weather service says a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located 5 miles west of Brooten, or 22 miles north of Willmar, and was moving northeast at 45 mph.
