A pair of bills Rep. Dale Lueck, R-Aitkin, led to enactment to assist veterans are now state laws as of Aug. 1. A bill Lueck authored and carried forward adds a "yes or no" veterans' status box to voluntary state board commission applications. The state already had been collecting statistical data on a voluntary basic information about applicants that apply for appointments to Minnesota's over 200 state-level boards, councils, commissions and task forces.

Liz and Jerry Paetow, of Montrose, Minn., have visited - - since 2007. The couple is on a quest to visit every county fair in the state.

Grant received for new hockey rink, pickleball court 

The city of Aitkin has received a grant and is moving forward on rebuilding the hockey rink at its city park, creating a pickleball court and erecting a new warming house. The city's Park Committee met July 18 to talk about the plans.

Lueck applauds Farm Family of the Year honorees 

Rep. Dale Lueck, R-Aitkin, congratulated two District 10B farm families-Luke Hauser of Demenge Dairy farm in Aitkin County and Kris and Andy Schubert in Crow Wing County-for recognition as the 2018 Farm Family of the Year in the two counties. The Farm Family Recognition Program, established more than 30 years ago, is coordinated by the University of Minnesota Extension.

Could Aitkin be a Tree City U.S.A.? 

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Private Lands Forester Troy Holcomb from Aitkin made a presentation to the Aitkin City Council about urban trees in the city of Aitkin at the July 16 meeting. A 2010 inventory showed many of the city trees are in the maple family, and many of the city trees are old.

Rocori board OKs superintendent contract 

Rocori school board approves Kelvington's contract as new superintendent Brad Kelvington is slated to begin at Rocori in August. His annual salary base is set at $140,000.

Emily Day is another success 

Chain saw sculpture artist Ben Semler of Baxter entertained the crowd at Emily Day by transforming a log into a work of art; The Emily Day Celebration was held on Saturday, July 21st at the Emily City Park. Due to construction and safety concerns the annual Emily Day Parade was cancelled.
