Ironton man found guilty on child pornography charges 

A 53-year-old Ironton man has been found guilty of distributing, receiving and possessing video and image files containing child pornography. Roger Erik Splettstoeszer, 53, was charged with four counts of distribution of child pornography, one count of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.

Lueck questions proposed buffer fines 

The Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources introduced a proposal that could have resulted in thousands of dollars in fines annually for farmers who are even a few feet out of compliance across their entire property. The Administrative Penalty Order BWSR issued last week would fine farmers out of compliance with Minnesota's riparian buffer law by up to $500 per linear foot.

Time for a strategic plan at ISD 1 

Aitkin School Board members gathered this week for an informal discussion about the current and future budget, how to better communicate with staff, parents, stakeholders and how to more strategically plan for the future. Board members reviewed the current budget; although revenue is about 20 percent below where one might expect on a pro rated basis, there are typically a number of year end items that resolve later in the year.

The Greater Lakes Association of Realtors Foundation donated $4,500 to area food shelves in Aitkin, Akeley, Brainerd/Baxter, Crosby, Crosslake, Emily, Garrison, Hackensack, Isle, Little Falls, Longville, Motley, Park Rapids, Nisswa/Pequot Lakes, PIerz, Pillager, Sebeka, Staples and Walker.

Minnesota Public Radio reports that American Peat Technology applies processed granulized peat to plants to help draw nitrogen from the air and reduce the need for fertilizer. The company harvests and processes peat in Aitkin.

The Regional Report: Breezy Point ranks high in tax-forfeited... 

Budget cuts are in the pipeline for the Aitkin School District, which has been spending at a deficit, the Aitkin Independent Age reported. The school board approved cuts totaling about $600,000 for the 2018-19 school year, including the elimination of staff positions.

Funding for disabled services is threatened 

Without action by the Minnesota Legislature, services for the disabled could face a 7 percent cut in funding. That includes the Developmental Achievement Center in McGregor and DAC Mart in Aitkin.
