Public input called for on mining 

A pair of state representatives from the region encouraged area residents to express support for the NorthMet permit to mine proposal by participating in the DNR's public comment period. The 60-day window to provide the DNR with input on PolyMet's proposed NorthMet mining project near Hoyt Lakes is open until March 6. Public comments can be submitted a number of ways, including at polymet.mn.

Area representatives call for public to weigh in on mining proposal 

A pair of state representatives from the region encouraged area residents to express support for the NorthMet permit to mine proposal by participating in the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' public comment period. The 60-day window to provide the DNR with input on PolyMet's proposed NorthMet mining project near Hoyt Lakes is now open and lasts until March 6. "Now is the time to show our support for safe mining expansion in northern Minnesota," said Rep. Sandy Layman, R-Cohasset, in a news release.

Aitkin PD approved for new squad car 

The Aitkin City Council unanimously approved the purchase of a new squad car for the Aitkin Police Department during the Jan. 2 city council meeting. Police Chief Tim Catlin presented information regarding two bids obtained for the squad car.

The board passed the resolution 4-3. The district's business manager Tiffany Gustin explained at the meeting the district faces a $1.7 million deficit in its general fund and currently has the lowest tax rate of 10 school districts in the county.

Tips Sought on Aitkin Co. Teen Missing 2 Months 

The Aitkin County Sheriff's Office is asking for tips from the public to help locate a teenager who has been missing for nearly two months. Sixteen-year-old Alexis Elling of Onamia left her residence on Nov. 11 and has not returned.

Burglary call results in 5 arrests; 2 charged 

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office arrested Charles Alvin Weber , 37, for felony second-degree burglary; Nichole Evelyn Petersen , 31, for felony fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance; and a 32-year-old man, a 36-year-old man and a 35-year-old man were booked in Crow Wing County Jail for violating conditions of their probation. TROMMALD-Five people were arrested following a report of a burglary at 2:13 p.m. Friday at a home in Trommald.

Free-throw contest, bingo add to winter activities 

The free-throw contest is for youths age 8-14 on Jan. 7 in three locations in the lake area: 1-3 p.m. at St. Francis School in Brainerd; 12:30 p.m. at Crosby; 1-3 p.m. at Crosslake Community Center. In addition, events are planned from 1-3 p.m. Feb. 4 at St. Francis School and Feb. 25 in Aitkin.

2 injured in Highway 169 crash 

Two people from Aitkin suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a crash on Highway 169 in Aitkin County Wednesday. At about 4 p.m., Deloach was at the intersection with 390th Street in Spencer Township when she broadsided a 2002 Ford Focus going west on County Road 54 and driven by Michael Loren Rootes, 49, Solway.

Residents turn up the heat on district over LOR tax increase 

Approximately 50 visitors packed the media center at the Aitkin High School for Monday's school board meeting. The agenda included an audit report, a presentation characterized as "Generic School Finance 101", and a board vote to levy $424 for school expenses on county property owners.

Holidays bring burglaries, upsetting any good cheer 

With Christmas looming on the calendar, residents discovered thieves had invaded their properties and made off with valuable items - from County Highway 30 by Crosby, to Spencer Road outside of Brainerd, to Marsh Point near Aitkin. BrainerdDispatch.com Illustration The Brainerd lakes area saw a jump in burglaries over the holiday weekend, with Crow Wing County Sheriff's deputies responding to four reports of break-ins, as well as assisting in two additional incidences in Aitkin and Cass counties.

Aitkin City levy up 3 percent from 2017 

Aitkin City Administrator Kathleen Ryan presented the proposed property tax levy for taxes payable and budget for 2018 at the public hearing held in conjunction with the Dec. 18 Aitkin City Council meeting. The tax levy was placed at $1,003,370.
