Underwood is a city in Otter Tail County, Minnesota, located between Fergus Falls and Battle Lake on Minnesota State Highway 210. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.1 km²), all of it land. The elevation is 1,335 ft (407 m) above sea level.

As of the census of 2000, there were 319 people, 142 households, and 95 families residing in the city. The population density was 752.3 people per square mile (293.3/km²). There were 154 housing units at an average density of 363.2/sq mi (141.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.06% White, 0.31% Asian, and 0.63% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.63% of the population.

There were 142 households out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.6% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.74.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 21.3% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 26.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,000, and the median income for a family was $34,375. Males had a median income of $28,438 versus $21,875 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,465. About 10.5% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.5% of those under age 18 and 22.9% of those age 65 or over.

UNDERWOOD, a city in section 32 of Sverdrup, platted in the fall of 1881 and incorporated November 22, 1912, was named in honor of Adoniram Judson Underwood, who was born in Clymer, N.Y., May 26, 1832, and died in Fergus Falls, December 21, 1885. He came to Minnesota in 1854; served in the First Minnesota and other regiments in the Civil War; was a representative in the legislature, 1871-72; settled at Fergus Falls in 1873, and was the founder and editor of the Journal, 1873-85. The post office was first called Turtle Lake, 1871-72 and 1876-84, at which time it was changed to Underwood; it had a station of the Northern Pacific Railroad.
